Taiyuan University of Science and Technology, formerly known as Taiyuan Institute of Heavy Machinery, specializes in mechanical design, manufacturing and automation. This major has a first-class doctorate in mechanical engineering.

Taiyuan University of Science and Technology, referred to as Taiyuan University of Science and Technology, is located in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province. The school's predecessor was Shanxi Machinery Manufacturing Industry School, which was founded in 1952 and later renamed Taiyuan Heavy Machinery College. In 2004, the school was renamed Taiyuan University of Science and Technology, and Shanxi Chemical Engineering School was merged into the school.
