It is one of the nine independent conservatories of music in China, and the only independent conservatory of music in Central China.

Shenyang Conservatory of Music is the only music art college with a long history and glorious tradition in Northeast China. Originated from 1938, Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and other proletarian revolutionaries of the older generation initiated and founded the first art college of our party-Yan 'an Luxun Art College. After the victory of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the college moved from Yan 'an to the northeast and settled in Shenyang. 1958 was renamed Shenyang Conservatory of Music.
