The school is located in Luzhou, a famous historical and cultural city in Sichuan Province. It is a pilot university of the "Excellent Doctor Education and Training Plan" and "Sichuan 20 1 1 Plan" of the national ministries and commissions. Its predecessor was Southwest Sichuan Medical College, which was founded in 195 1. 1959 was renamed Luzhou medical college, 1978 was upgraded to Luzhou medical college, and on 20 15 it was renamed Sichuan medical university.

The school has 12 colleges (departments): Basic Medical College, Clinical Medical College, College of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Stomatological Medical College, Nursing College, Pharmacy College, Humanities and Management College, Law School, Foreign Languages College, Public Health College, Physical Education College, and Teaching and Research Department of Ideological and Political Theory Course, involving seven disciplines: medicine, science, management, law, engineering, literature and teaching.
