The Association of Southeast Asian Nations has successively established free trade zones with six countries including China, South Korea and Japan, and China, Japan, South Korea, India, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and the United States have successively joined the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, establishing "10+ 1" and "10+3" around ASEAN.
In addition, ASEAN actively develops cooperative relations with the United Nations, the European Union, the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf and the Southern Common Market.

The relationship between ASEAN and China is "very solid", with comprehensive and in-depth strategic cooperation in three pillar areas. Joseph Matthews, director of Cambodian ASEAN Education Center, said that the close relationship between China and ASEAN in many fields has long ensured regional peace, security and stable development. Matthews emphasized that China's sincere and inclusive concept of peripheral diplomacy won the hearts of the people in East Asia.
