Great thinker: Adam Smith

Deng Jianying, 20 10 in-service graduate student of public administration

Who is Adam Smith? China people may not know much, but in Britain, he is one of the three world-famous figures, and ranks as the most admired thinker of the British people along with Newton and Shakespeare. Today, in the classroom of the Party School of the Provincial Party Committee, Professor Peng Yimin gave us a lesson on the study of western management theory, and I looked up to Adam Smith again.

Ask today's children: What is your ideal? It is reported that some children and even many children in China want to be officials-corrupt officials. Although some students have been admitted to key universities, they are very confused about the future. In the mainstream environment of market economy, many parents want their children to take an economic-related major. As a result, those once popular majors are facing work problems. A friend once asked me why I still want to go to graduate school at such an old age, and I majored in public administration. It seems to be out of touch with the art of education. After a year of study, I can finally tell my friends who care about me that my choice has my own pursuit. This study enriched my life and made my knowledge structure more diversified. People are very thoughtful. Learning from thinkers will broaden our minds and broaden our horizons.

Adam Smith was a famous British economist and ethicist in the18th century. Born on June 5th in Fife, Scotland,1723; 1737 entered the University of Glasgow to study philosophy; 1740 was selected for further study at Oxford University; 1autumn of 748, lecturer at Edinburgh University; 175 1 Professor, University of Glasgow; 1763, as the accompanying tutor of the adopted son of the British Chancellor of the Exchequer; 1778 as director of Edinburgh customs; Smith devoted his life to two classic works handed down from generation to generation: On Moral Sentiments (1759) and The Wealth of Nations (1776). The former is an ethical work, and its publication made Smith famous in academic circles; The latter is an economic work, and its publication marks the birth of economics as an independent discipline, and also makes Adam Smith gain the immortal reputation of "the father of economics". The Theory of Moral Sentiments is divided into seven parts and has been revised six times. In the book, Smith explains the origin of all moral feelings such as justice, kindness and self-denial with the basic principle of sympathy, explains the nature and principles of moral evaluation and the characteristics of various virtues, and introduces and evaluates various moral philosophy theories, thus revealing the foundation on which human society depends for maintaining and developing harmoniously, and the general moral standards that human behavior should follow. Compared with The Wealth of Nations, The Theory of Moral Sentiments has a far-reaching influence on the western world and played a more fundamental role in promoting the greater social purpose of human welfare. It is undoubtedly of great significance for the benign operation of China's market economy in the transitional period, for everyone in this transitional period to have a deeper understanding of human nature and human emotions, and finally to promote the harmonious development of society.

Adam Smith left two seemingly contradictory ideological themes-"egoism" and "altruism", which is the "Adam Smith problem". The solution of this problem is of great significance for enriching the connotation of entrepreneurship. Dialectically, egoism and altruism can be unified. His egoistic outlook on life is subjective self-interest and objective benefit to others. For example, in order to make more money, food manufacturing enterprises should not only consider their own interests, but also consider the interests of consumers themselves. Consumers' pursuit of quality and price is selfish, and enterprises can only consider benefiting others and benefiting themselves. How many people can think like this? Lack of social integrity and moral crisis have made many people lose their way.
