Is it reasonable for college entrance examination English to drop to 100?
Recently, Dai Qingming, deputy to the National People's Congress and principal of Yucheng No.2 Middle School in Ya 'an City, Sichuan Province, suggested that the subject score of college entrance examination language should be reduced to 100.

Yan Qingming believes that there are problems in the current college entrance examination model:

① college entrance examination language scores are too high, which consumes too much energy and time for students;

② Foreign languages have limited practical value for many people;

③ It is not good for Urban-rural Education Fairness. The greater the college entrance examination language score, the worse it will be for backward areas, especially rural students.

④ Increase students' learning burden;

⑤ The time that students actually spend on foreign language learning far exceeds the proportion of allocated class hours.

It is reported that in 2022, the Ministry of Education stipulates that the proportion of class hours in all subjects will be 20%-22%, mathematics 13%- 15%, sports and health10/1%,and foreign languages will be 6%-8%.

Duo Qingming has been teaching for more than 30 years. Since he became the principal of Yucheng No.2 Middle School in 2005, he has actively explored the road of running a school with characteristics, which has enabled the school to form a trinity of general education, physical education and vocational education.

The suggestion that "the Chinese in the college entrance examination should be reduced to 100" immediately triggered a heated discussion. Some netizens objected: "Don't drop it, it is very useful."

In fact, the website of the Ministry of Education has responded to whether the proportion of English teaching should be reduced.

On September 23rd, 2022, the Ministry of Education published a reply to the proposal of "Strengthening cultural self-confidence, increasing the reform of cultural content teaching and reducing the proportion of English teaching in China" in its official website.

The Ministry of Education pointed out in its reply that the proportion of foreign language courses in primary and secondary schools is lower than that in subjects such as Chinese. Foreign language is an important part of students' all-round development in morality, intelligence, physique, beauty and labor, which is helpful to cultivate and develop students' core qualities such as language ability, cultural awareness, thinking quality and learning ability, and cultivate students' China feelings, international vision and cross-cultural communication ability. Compulsory Education Curriculum Plan (2022 Edition) stipulates that the proportion of class hours in each subject is: Chinese 20%-22%, mathematics 13%- 15%, physical education and health 10%- 1%, and foreign languages 6%- According to the Curriculum Plan for Ordinary Senior High Schools (version 20 17, revised in 2020), the proportion of compulsory foreign language credits in ordinary senior high schools is about 7%. Foreign language class hours are obviously lower than those of Chinese, mathematics, physical education, art and other disciplines.

The Ministry of Education made it clear in the reply that the proportion of foreign language examinations should be determined according to the requirements of the central authorities. In 20 14, the State Council, China issued the "Implementation Opinions on Deepening the Reform of Examination Enrollment System", which clearly stipulated that the subjects of Chinese, mathematics and foreign languages in the unified college entrance examination should remain unchanged, and the scores should remain unchanged. At present, the arrangement of foreign language unified examination is determined according to the top-level design of the reform of college entrance examination by the central government.
