What are the disadvantages of twelve-year compulsory education?
It is true that the implementation of 12-year compulsory education conforms to the trend of economic development to a certain extent, which can improve the quality of our population and promote educational equity. At the same time, it also greatly reduces the cost of family education, and may also play a certain role in stimulating fertility. So many people on the Internet began to encourage and support twelve-year compulsory education. However, the author disagrees with this view. There are three reasons, especially the third one, which is hard to refute. First of all, the implementation of twelve-year compulsory education has greatly increased the state's education expenditure. China has a large population base and a large number of students, so the period of compulsory education will be extended for three years, which will be a huge capital expenditure. This does not mean that investment in education cannot be increased. In fact, the state is increasing investment in education every year. Just such a huge expenditure, we must analyze and judge, after all, it will affect the whole body. Second, it will affect the development of vocational education. At present, the diversion of general education and vocational education in China occurs in senior high school. Imagine that if compulsory education is suddenly implemented in high schools, it is conceivable that the separation of general education and vocational education will be affected, and even lead directly to the decline of vocational colleges. In China itself, the development of vocational education can be said to be difficult, and there is not much improvement. If it is impacted by the extension of compulsory education again, I am afraid it will usher in the "cold winter" of vocational education development. Third, instead of implementing free education, it is better to extend the period of compulsory education. The so-called compulsory education is balanced, compulsory, free and compulsory. In other words, you have the obligation to go to school, and you must go to school, which is mandatory. You can't just drop out of school. This involves the issue of individual freedom of choice. Moreover, at present, the average length of compulsory education in the world is 9.24 years, of which 9.5 years in middle and high income countries. Twelve-year compulsory education is a bit too long. So, what is the international practice? Advocate free education. After nine-year compulsory education, high school is free. You can choose to go to school or not. At the same time, respecting students' right to go to school and not to go to school can kill two birds with one stone. For example, in Singapore, compulsory education lasts only six years, but free education is implemented, so the per capita education level in Singapore is not low. It can be seen that the level of national education has little to do with the length of compulsory education. Therefore, the author supports the implementation of free education in areas where conditions permit in China, rather than the one-size-fits-all 12-year compulsory education.
