How to find a suitable spiritual mentor?
The best spiritual teacher lives in our hearts. When we realize the present, the truth and the answer are all around us. Confucius said, "A threesome must have a teacher. It means that everyone has something to learn. However, in the field of spiritual practice, some people will follow a master for a long time. There is a saying: "a good teacher will let you go to heaven, and a bad teacher will let you live in a suite." This sentence is actually a bit biased, and there is an obvious blind spot-why do you want to find a teacher? Why do you need a spiritual mentor? If you ask 100 people this question, there will be different answers: "Because I want to be enlightened", "Because Master is very wise", "Because I want to get rid of my troubles" and "Because I will be happy" ... You can find endless reasons for Qian Qian, but the final reason is the same-for yourself. Similarly, it involves one thing-we always feel that others have what we want and what we don't think we have, so we have to go to the teacher to learn. A persuasive tutor can bring you new insights, but he is still a mortal. What should you do when you see the teacher's shortcomings and feel that he is not as perfect as you think? Criticizing your mentor is not the best choice, but should reflect: what influence has your mentor brought to yourself? In The Wind of Awakening, it is mentioned that Nisargadatta, an Indian spiritual teacher, was asked whether the guru should be "a person with correct conduct", and he replied, "There are many such people, but they are useless to you. Being a teacher is to show you the way back to yourself. What does this have to do with his personality and temper? ... the only thing you can refer to is what changes you have when you are with him ... If you know yourself better than usual, you have found the right person. A Japanese who has been practicing for many years told the author that although his meditation teacher has shortcomings in personality, he is the only mentor on this practice road who really lets him know about Zen. If a person can let you know the inner truth and see the texture of everything in the universe on more levels, then he must be a guide with good quality, so that you can catch a glimpse of the shining corner of truth in the magnificent and mysterious universe. Everything is empty. There is no distinction between good and bad. Once good, once bad, follow the trend. For example, a person is always stingy, but the money he desperately saves is used to support a family's life-saving money. Is this good? Still bad? For others, he is too stingy; But for his family, if he is not stingy, he has no money to live. All good and bad are relative. If you find the shortcomings of others, you can try to see your own shortcomings. Does it make sense? Or, what can you do to transform it? The problems of others are often a mirror of ourselves. We can't change others, but we can transform ourselves. I think so: in fact, there is no need to find a spiritual mentor. Everyone can learn insights, and everyone can see the fragments of their own problems. We can always educate ourselves with new truths. The best spiritual teacher lives in our hearts. When we keep our awareness of the present, the truth and the answer will be with us.
