The new academic system has strengthened secondary education. The educational system of middle schools has been extended from four years to six years, which has greatly improved the level of middle school education and facilitated the connection between middle schools and universities. Dividing middle schools into junior high schools and senior high schools not only increases the flexibility of local schools, but also takes care of students' choices. Curriculum standards of the new academic system:
The subjects offered in primary schools are Mandarin, arithmetic, health, citizenship, history, geography, nature gardening, public art, graphic art, physical education and music. Middle schools implement credit system and elective system. Compulsory subjects in junior high school include citizenship, history, geography, Mandarin, foreign languages, mathematics, nature, painting, handicrafts, music, physical health and physical education.
High school adopts comprehensive middle school system, which is divided into general courses and vocational courses. General subjects are divided into two groups: arts and sciences. Public compulsory subjects include: Mandarin, foreign languages, philosophy of life, social issues, cultural history, introduction to science and physical education.
The first group (liberal arts) subjects are: special language, preliminary psychology, preliminary ethics, natural science or mathematics. The second group (science) is trigonometry, high school geometry, high school algebra, analytic geometry, physics, chemistry and biology. There are also elective courses.
