At present, only college students can take CET, and those with higher English level can take PETS. If you successfully get the PETS certificate, you can also avoid taking some courses of self-taught examination.

The written test of CET-4 and CET-6 adopts "multiple questions and multiple volumes". The so-called "multiple questions and multiple volumes" refers to the use of multiple sets of test papers in the same examination room, which is essentially different from the previous "one question and multiple volumes" examination by changing the order of test questions.

There are 30 candidates in each examination room, and there are about 6 to 8 sets of papers. At the same time, the length of the test, the order of the test questions and the total number of test questions will not change. As a national teaching test, CET-4 and CET-6 are sponsored by the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education and divided into CET-4 and CET-6, which are held twice a year in the morning and afternoon on the same day.

In terms of content and form, CET-4 and CET-6 will increase the number and proportion of listening questions, the number of fast reading comprehension questions and the proportion of non-multiple choice questions. CET-4 and CET-6 will still be implemented separately from the written test, and CET-4 and CET-6, which have been implemented for five years, will continue to be used. At the same time, the Examination Committee will actively develop the computer-based oral examination, further expand the scale of oral examination, and promote college oral teaching.
