It is now the economic, cultural and transportation center of southwest Ghana. It is located in the center of cocoa producing area, and it is one of the important distribution centers of cocoa, gold, bauxite, grain and livestock. The timber industry accounts for 50% of the national timber industry. Industry is dominated by cocoa processing, wood processing, textiles, chemicals, food and machinery manufacturing. It is famous for its traditional weaving and ceramic handicrafts. There are railways connecting Accra, Ta Corati and Secandi, and highways extending in all directions. There is an airport. The city retains the throne of King Ashanti and the Golden Dengzi stone statue symbolizing the royal authority and people's unity. There are universities of science and technology, agricultural research institutes and modern hospitals. There are many places of interest. The Forbidden City and the Royal Museum of Ashanti Kingdom are famous historical sites. Some houses with earth, wood and grass structures in the northwest of the city are the last traces of Ashanti's ancient civilization.
Kumasi 1979 is listed in the World Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection List by UNESCO.
