Degree categories in China are divided into academic degrees and professional degrees. Degrees are awarded according to disciplines, that is, bachelor's degree/master's degree/doctor's degree in philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, military science, management and art.

Although professional degrees are also divided into three levels: bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctor's degree, generally only master's degree is offered. The State Council has established the Academic Degrees Committee, which is responsible for leading the work of conferring academic degrees nationwide, implementing a centralized and unified national evaluation system, and examining the unified deployment of academic degree authorization nationwide. The list of institutions of higher learning and scientific research institutions that confer degrees and the disciplines that can confer degrees shall be put forward by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and published after the approval of the State Council.
