Huanggang is one of the important places of Buddhist culture in China. Huangmei Wuzu Temple was founded by Zen master Hongren, the fifth ancestor of Zen Buddhism, in the fifth year of Tang Yonghui (654). It is also the place where Master Huineng, the sixth ancestor, got his clothes. It is called "the ancestral home on earth" and is one of the important Buddhist temples.

It not only has an irreplaceable position in the history of Buddhism, but also has an important influence in the whole cultural circle of China. In addition, Huangmei has Sizu Temple, which is the first Buddhist temple in China, 30 years earlier than Wuzu Temple. Looking back on history, Huanggang's historical position in Buddhism is not inferior to Xi 'an, Luo Yang, Putuo and other cities.

2. Traditional Chinese medicine culture

When it comes to Chinese medicine, Li Shizhen, a famous doctor in Ming Dynasty, is indispensable. Li Shizhen is from Qichun County, Huanggang City. In the medical history of China, Li Shizhen is a very representative figure, and his Compendium of Materia Medica is a masterpiece in the medical history of China.

Today, Compendium of Materia Medica still has irreplaceable value in traditional Chinese medicine. His judgment on drug characteristics not only has important enlightening significance to the history of traditional Chinese medicine and herbal medicine, but also has outstanding contributions to the history of medicine and plant research in the world.

3. Education, science and culture

The "three academies" in Huanggang-Hedong Academy, Jinwen Academy and Linshan Academy-have trained nearly 200 scholars for Huanggang. Su Dongpo once relegated Huangzhou, leaving a masterpiece "Red Cliff Nostalgia"; Su Zhe's Huangzhou Kuaizai Pavilion is very famous. Neo-Confucianism in Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi rose because of Huanggang culture.

The ancient scientist groups represented by Bi Sheng, Pang Anshi, Liu Tianhe and Wan Mizhai are unique in the history of science and technology in China. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Wu Cheng'en, Li Zhi and Feng Menglong, who lived in Huanggang, also enriched the cultural connotation of Huanggang.

4. Other folk cultures

Huanggang's folk culture is represented by opera, embroidery, legend, martial arts and music, which is the epitome of Huanggang's history and humanity. Huangmei's Huangmei Opera is very famous, and Chu Opera, Han Opera, Dongqian Opera, Dongluzi Ancient Painting Opera, Wuxue Wen Quxi and Yingshan Tea Picking Opera also compete in Huanggang.

Eight items, including Hong 'an Embroidery in Hong 'an County, Ancient Painting Opera in Macheng City, Legend of Li Shizhen in Qichun County, Hubei Dagu in Tuanfeng County, Yuejiaquan in Wuxue City, Huangmei Opera in Huangmei County, Flower Picking in Huangmei County and Legend of the Founder of Huangmei Zen, were listed in the national intangible cultural heritage protection list, and Huangmei County was named as "the hometown of folk culture and art in China" by the Ministry of Culture twice in a row.
