Qujing, alias Wei or Cuan, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Yunnan Province. It is located in the east of Yunnan Province, at the source of the Pearl River, at the junction of Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi provinces, bordering Xingyi City and Liupanshui City in Guizhou Province in the east, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in the south, Kunming City in the west and Zhaotong City in the north.
Known as "the key to Yunnan and Guizhou" and "the throat of Yunnan", it is 28900km2 away from the provincial capital Kunming 120km, accounting for 13.63% of the area of Yunnan province. In April 2023, Yunnan Provincial Bureau of Statistics released the main data bulletin of permanent population in Yunnan Province in 2022. Qujing has a permanent population of 5.756 million, and the urbanization rate is 50.56%.
Qujing City is located in Wumeng Mountain Range, the transition zone from East Yunnan Plateau to West Guizhou Plateau in the middle of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. The west is embedded in the lake basin of the central Yunnan Plateau, and the east gradually transits to the Guizhou Plateau. The middle part is the watershed between the Yangtze River and the Pearl River, with high terrain in the northwest and low terrain in the southeast.
Qujing is an important node of the National Belt and Road Initiative, the Yangtze River Economic Belt Strategy, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP), and Yunnan's construction of a radiation center for South Asia and Southeast Asia. It is also the radiation-driven area of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, and the core area of central Yunnan urban agglomeration.
It is a national comprehensive transportation hub, a regional circulation node city and a sub-central city in Yunnan Province. Qujing has been selected into the list of "Top Ten Livable Cities in China" for six times and won the title of National Ecological Garden City and National Sanitary City. It was listed as the first batch of national comprehensive pilot areas for new urbanization and was awarded the title of "National Forest City and National Garden City".
