What was this change a few years ago? Let's review:

From 2009 to 20 10, I introduced the national reading education in North America on Sina blog, and these contents were later assembled in the book Going Abroad. At that time, many people left messages on my blog, sighing, when will China pay so much attention to reading?

I have been talking about the value of reading since 20 12. One thing that impressed me the most was that a parent told me in the lecture that she had given the teacher an "English enlightenment class that should not be missed". But the teacher said that teaching English like this is not the mainstream, so we will not do it.

At that time, I was shocked by the new idea, and there were 50 QQ groups for my parents to consult. Almost every day, many parents ask me anxiously: You are right, but reading is a kind of quality education. We know that studying is good, but what if we don't have the courage to compete with the exam?

I still remember writing two blog posts at that time, "Choose a school, see today or tomorrow" and "What is education after 10". My judgment at that time was that it was an inevitable trend for China's education reform to be in line with international standards. Actually, it was earlier than I expected.

In less than ten years, this is not a standard "memory killing", but we can clearly see that:

Kindergartens and primary schools pay more and more attention to reading, and the evaluation criteria are very different from the past. Once, extracurricular reading was equal to "reading idle books", which was regarded as a scourge affecting performance by many teachers and parents. Probably when many parents were young, just like my youth, they developed a set of magical skills of "how to peek at martial arts novels" without being discovered.

Now, looking at Anne, Bao Xiao, Anniwa and all the children in the country, I was taught that reading more books is a good boy. There are all kinds of suitable graded reading materials for them to choose freely since childhood. Even English-speaking institutions, including those that used to focus on exams, are now paying full attention to reading.

Why did this change happen? Let's take a look at the sources where North American education attaches importance to reading education.

First, let's look at the SAT, which is the entrance examination for American universities. 20 17, SAT attaches great importance to reading and strengthens the cultivation of rational reading and reading thinking ability. As for the score design of the SAT writing part, of the 24 points, 8 points are reading comprehension, 8 points are reading material analysis, and the other 8 points are writing skills.

If we study the basic education system in the United States, we will find that the evaluation criteria of their basic education are in line with the college entrance examination. Therefore, the baton of the American college entrance examination has actually been determining the educational direction of American children for so many years.

The so-called leadership is a scholar (reading is an essential ability for successful people), which also helps children understand the meaning of reading from an early age and gives parents the motivation to work hard for their children's success (who says that American education is not utilitarian ~). Therefore, the structure of their basic education system, from 5 years old to K level (the compulsory education system in North America starts from preschool, which is different from ours), until the third grade (G3), and it takes four years to learn to read.
