After all, we were really backward at that time, and it was really good to say that we would be beaten if we were backward.

Later, the United States had a very strange move, that is, it gave us some compensation at that time and paid it back to us in batches for almost 30 years. However, it is stipulated that all the money should be used for education, and some China students should be sent to study in the United States every year. Although this is really strange, it has really helped us a lot and is still very beneficial to us.

Because the Westernization Movement also stimulated the importance of education at that time, education was strongly advocated at that time. Because of this money, we established Tsinghua University's predecessor, the Preparatory School for Studying in the United States. Every year, a group of China students are sent to the United States. Some people say that this move by Americans is actually to make us China people treat them better, spread their American culture and education, and safeguard other interests of our country. Anyway, it does bring us a lot of benefits.
