Influenced by different civilizations, Mexican Chinese children's unique growth trajectory.
The children of Chinese families in Mexico are a special group. Influenced by two completely different civilizations, they have their own styles, and they have formed a unique growth track.

Yale girls are not "good girls"

Xinhua News Agency reported that Zhou Lingyan, president of the Confucius Institute in Mexico City, is always full of pride and happiness whenever his daughter is mentioned. Because Zhou Lingyan's daughter is studying at Yale University, she naturally becomes the envy of China's parents and even Mexican friends around her.

As the first batch of public students after the reform and opening up, Zhou Lingyan came to Mexico in 1979, and married her husband who was also an international student in Mexico. Her daughter was born in Mexico and received basic education here.

Zhou Lingyan said that her daughter had a wide range of interests since she was a child. When I was 9 years old, I began to learn to play table tennis with a Chinese table tennis coach in Mexico. 10 years old, my daughter went to China for training with the coach in the summer vacation, and her talent in table tennis was well demonstrated. After returning to Mexico, she was selected into the Mexican national youth team, representing Mexico in international competitions and won many awards.

After entering middle school, she systematically studied swimming, volleyball and other sports. Years of sports experience have tempered her strong and cheerful personality and excellent organization and coordination ability, and she has also become a leader among her peers. While insisting on extracurricular sports, she also maintained excellent academic performance, and finally impressed Yale University, a world-renowned university, with its all-round development and excellent quality, becoming the first Mexican international student who successfully applied for Yale University.

When Zhou Lingyan's daughter was admitted to Yale University, she immediately became the focus of China's parents' attention, and her friends came to Zhou Lingyan to study. Zhou Lingyan said that children should be given enough freedom to fully develop their interests and hobbies, instead of making choices according to their parents' wishes.

Zhou Lingyan said that China parents in are also facing a new problem, that is, how to let their children learn Chinese and China culture. These Mexican-born children have no obstacles to integrate into the local environment and cultural atmosphere, but the distant China seems strange to them.

It is for this reason that Zhou Lingyan and his friends in China offered Chinese classes for their children, which was the predecessor of the Confucius Institute in Mexico City. Since the children were a little sensible, Ling Zhou Yan will took them back to China every summer vacation, concentrated on studying Chinese courses, visited famous mountains and rivers and places of interest, and cultivated their feelings for China. It can be said that her practice has achieved remarkable results and has become an example for other parents in China to follow.

"Overseas education" has not reduced family ties.

Compared with, Liu, a tenured professor of economics at National Autonomous University of Mexico, is more maverick in the way of educating children. Liu and his wife have studied, worked and lived in Mexico for more than 20 years. They have always left their children at their grandparents' home in Beijing. At first glance, it seems that he didn't care enough about his children, or at least didn't participate in their growth, but when he expounded his educational philosophy, it was convincing.

Liu's strategy is actually very simple, that is, he often communicates with his children by telephone, understands their study, life and thoughts, grasps the growth trend, and goes back to Beijing every year to accompany them and consolidate their feelings. Liu said that in this way, he can devote himself to his work without interference from his children, and he can accompany his children all day and in all directions without interference from his work.

This method is risky, after all, children are not around, and every bit of growth will affect parents' hearts. Therefore, at some key nodes, Liu will take special measures. For example, in the year of her daughter's senior high school entrance examination, Liu returned to Beijing for four months to accompany her daughter with her lessons and take care of her life.
