Confucius' ancestor was an aristocrat in Yi Li (now Xiayi County, Henan Province) in Song Dynasty, and his ancestor was Shang Tang, the founding monarch of Shang Dynasty. After the rebellion of the three kingdoms in the early Zhou Dynasty, in order to appease the nobles and future generations of the Shang Dynasty, Duke Zhou appointed his brother Wei to establish the Song Kingdom in Shangqiu and sacrificed it to the Shang Dynasty. After Wei's death, his brother succeeded to the throne and was the fourteenth ancestor of Confucius.
