Adobe was founded by John Warnock and Charles Gershke in 1982 and 12 respectively. Both of them had previously worked in the Palo Alto Research Center of Xerox. After they left, they formed Adobe to commercialize PostScript page description language. The company name "Adobe" comes from Adobe Creek in Los Artus, California, not far from the original office of the company in Mountain View, California.

In June 2022, Adobe, together with Microsoft, Epic Games and other companies and organizations, established the Metacosmic Standards Forum, which is a Metacosmic Standards Organization.
On September 15, 2022, Adobe announced that it had signed a final acquisition agreement with the startup Figma, which is a startup company developing "online design collaboration tools".
On September 29th, 2022, Adobe released the new version of Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements software in 2023, which supports Apple chips and AI.
