Kunming Railway Vocational and Technical College is a public full-time vocational college with a long history and distinctive industry characteristics. Founded by the former Ministry of Railways 1958, formerly known as Kunming Railway Machinery School. In 2004, the railway was separated from the main railway and the school was handed over from kunming railway administration to Kunming Municipal People's Government.

The college is located in Kunming, the spring city, and has two campuses, Xiaoshiba and Yangfu. Five secondary colleges are set up around the rail transit and postal communication industry chain, and 24 majors are set up, including railway locomotive, railway power supply, high-speed rail engineering, urban rail transit operation management and modern communication technology. "Operation and Maintenance of Railway Locomotive" is a provincial high-level professional group.

Adhering to the motto of "iron shoulders and morality", the College has established the school-running philosophy of "walking with the railway and staying with the future", established the development orientation of "based on the southwest, serving the whole country and radiating South Asia and Southeast Asia", devoted itself to cultivating high-quality skilled personnel and laborers in rail transit and postal communication, and strived to build a highland for the training of rail transit and postal communication skills in South Asia and Southeast Asia.

The College adheres to the strategy of strengthening the school with talents, enjoys the special allowance of the State Council teachers, the famous teachers of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program", the winners of the National May 1 Labor Medal, outstanding professional and technical talents with outstanding contributions in Yunnan Province, the National Railway Vocational Education Teaching Steering Committee and Huang Yanpei's outstanding vocational education teachers, and has a teaching innovation team of 1 vocational education teachers.

The college has improved the system and mechanism of integration of production and education and cooperation between schools and enterprises to educate people, and has cooperated deeply with enterprises in specialty construction, personnel training, curriculum construction, double-qualified team construction, internship training and enterprise employment, and achieved fruitful results. The first is to promote in-depth cooperation between schools and enterprises.

The College has successively signed strategic cooperation agreements with Kunming Rail Transit Group Co., Ltd., Yunnan Jingjian Rail Transit Investment and Construction Co., Ltd., Tiejian High-tech Equipment Co., Ltd., Yunnan Communication Industry Service Co., Ltd. and many other enterprises.

In May 2020, Kunming Municipal People's Government signed a cooperation framework agreement with China Railway Kunming Bureau Group Co., Ltd., relying on the college to increase the training of railway technical personnel, and build a "government-enterprise-school" joint school-running model.

JD.COM Campus Training Center, Huawei ICT College, Safety Education and Training Base of Postal Industry Safety Center of State Post Bureau and "Strength ICT Industry College" were jointly established with Yunnan Strength Group.
