In order to improve the production efficiency of yak and speed up the genetic progress of cattle breeding, the research on artificial insemination technology of yak began in the mid-1970s, mainly using rectal grasping method. Subsequently, a large number of yak artificial insemination hybrid improvement experiments were carried out using frozen semen of black-and-white dairy cows and Simmental cattle. The successful cultivation, semen cryopreservation and artificial insemination of Datong yak have played a revolutionary role. Therefore, the application and popularization of artificial insemination technology has greatly improved the breeding efficiency of excellent male yak and accelerated the genetic improvement of yak.

At present, the main problems existing in artificial insemination of yak are the need to further strengthen the research on the preservation and utilization of frozen semen, and the time and place of insemination.
