After the founding of New China, in order to learn from the experience of socialist construction in the Soviet Union, at the initiative of Chen Yi, then mayor of Shanghai, and with the decision of the East China Bureau of the Central Committee and the Shanghai Municipal Committee, a school for training Russian talents was established in Shanghai on the basis of the Fourth Department of East China People's Revolutionary University. "Shanghai Russian School Affiliated to East China People's Revolutionary University" was thus established, 1949+05438. Jiang Chunfang, president of Time Publishing House, who has been engaged in translation and publication of Russian news literature for many years and is quite famous in the cultural field, was appointed as the first president by the Shanghai Municipal Committee. The original school building is located in Baoshan Road (the former Second Hospital of Jinan University).
East China People's Revolutionary University Affiliated Foreign Language School (1950 ——1952)
Mayor Chen Yi visited the school many times and asked the school leaders to take a long-term view and train professionals in other languages except Russian. According to Comrade Chen Yi's instructions, in order to meet the needs of the country's diplomatic and foreign trade work, the school added an English class at 1950, renamed it "Foreign Language Specialized School Affiliated to East China People's Revolutionary University", and moved to Sports Club East Road (formerly the First Hospital of Jinan University). 195 1 April, the school established the Department of Oriental Languages and Literature, adding Burmese, Vietnamese and Indonesian majors. 1in March, 952, more than 50 students were merged into the foreign language specialized school affiliated to the political department of Nanjing East China Military Region. By August 1952, the school had begun to take shape, with five languages: Russian, English, Burmese, Vietnamese and Indonesian.
Shanghai Russian Professional School (1952 ——1956)
Since the second half of 1952, colleges and universities across the country have implemented unified enrollment and started to adjust departments. According to the instruction of the Ministry of Education, all the teachers and students of the Oriental Language and Literature Department of the school were merged into Peking University, and only Russian major was set up. In September of the same year, the school was renamed as "Shanghai Russian Specialized School", and in June165438+1October, it was renamed as "Shanghai Russian Specialized School" again, with a fixed academic system of three years. At that time, the school first hired a Soviet expert, Bi Riggins Kaya, to work in the school to guide the compilation of Russian readers and conversation textbooks.
Shanghai International Studies University (1956 ——1994)
From 65438 to 0956, with the approval of the State Council, the school was renamed "Shanghai International Studies University", with English, French and German majors added, and the academic system was changed to four years. At that time, the Russian major of the school was still enrolling students, and the English, French and German majors were also actively preparing for running the school, and the enrollment was scheduled to be 1957. However, the expansion of the "anti-rightist" struggle that followed failed to realize the enrollment plan of English, French and German majors, and the development of the school shrank relatively. The school had to transfer a considerable number of foreign language teachers from 1957 to 1960 to other universities and scientific research units.
At the same time, students from Shandong University and other institutions transferred to study (1957), and the English major of the Foreign Languages Department of Shanghai First Normal University was merged into the school (1958). The school opened an evening school department in 1958, with four languages: English, German, French and Russian, and the first batch of students enrolled 2200. In the same year, entrusted by the Finance and Trade Department of Shanghai Municipal Committee and the Shanghai Foreign Trade Bureau, a foreign trade department in six languages was established, including English, German, French, Japanese, Arabic and Spanish. In the meantime, the Department of Foreign Trade finally transferred from 65438 to Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade (now university of international business and economics, Shanghai) 0978.
1963 September 12, approved by the central government, Shanghai International Studies University was listed as a national key institution of higher learning, directly under the leadership of the Ministry of Education. 1964 65438+1October 3 1 approved by the the State Council148th plenary meeting and signed by the premier, the former vice president and Russian translator Wang of Heilongjiang University was transferred to the post of president of Shanghai International Studies University, which is the first president appointed by the State Council since the school was founded. During this period, the school also set up a training department for preparatory personnel studying abroad, and established foreign language schools (namely, foreign language schools attached to Shanghai Education Bureau), foreign language primary schools attached to Shanghai (namely, foreign language schools attached to Shanghai Education Bureau) and other teaching departments. From June 65438 to June 0966, the so-called "suspension of classes to make revolution" began, which made the party and government work and various management work in the whole school unable to be carried out, teaching and scientific research were limited to a standstill, and a large number of party and government management cadres and teachers at all levels in the school suffered various persecution and blows.
1970, the school set up a pilot class with 32 students (English and German). Subsequently, according to the instructions of the Ministry of Education, the school officially resumed enrollment in May 1972, and enrolled 536 students of workers, peasants and soldiers in 9 majors including English, Russian, German, French, Japanese, Arabic, Spanish, Greek and Italian for 3 years. Starting from 1973, Albanian major has been added. As a result, the foreign students overcame many difficulties and began to rebuild the teaching order and restore the teaching work.
The school first restored the department system, rebuilt the teaching and research section and teaching group, opened the library, and so on. Shanghai International Studies University tried its best to provide solid and systematic teaching and careful training for the three-year professional study of workers, peasants and soldiers at that time, including offering six courses; In the meantime, students of workers, peasants and soldiers were also organized to leave the school gate and "open the door to run a school" to apply foreign language professional knowledge and skills to practice. At the same time, Shanghai International Studies University has also undertaken and completed the training and teaching tasks of some foreign language talents. During this period, we also held a Russian correspondence course in Heilongjiang, an English short course in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, and various foreign language short courses, with more than 1400 participants. 1976 10, the gang of four was smashed in one fell swoop, and the teaching work in Shanghai and abroad began to gradually get out of the trough and get re-development.
From 65438 to 0979, the school system was restored to four years, and graduate students began to be recruited, and all the work of the school gradually became formal. In order to meet the needs of reform and opening up, the school resumed the overseas training department in the same year, and established Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, various research institutions, books and reference centers and foreign language examination centers. In the same year, it established a branch school with Xuhui District Government (later Shanghai University International Business School).
Since 1982, the school has been preparing to develop from a single-subject foreign language college to a multi-disciplinary applied foreign language university. Since 1983, new majors such as international news, international trade, international economic law, international accounting, teaching Chinese as a foreign language, foreign affairs management, news dissemination and technology have been added one after another. 1September, 1983, the State Council Academic Degrees Committee approved the right to confer doctoral degrees in English and Russian. 1985 In May, with the consent of the Ministry of Education, the school's English translation was changed from Shanghai International Studies University to Shanghai International Studies University. During the period of 1993, under the leadership and support of the State Education Commission and the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, the school took the lead in implementing the system of combining the entrance fee for freshmen with scholarships and loans in universities across the country.

In 2000, the school built a new campus in Shanghai Songjiang University Town, and undergraduates and graduate students moved in one after another.
