As the power source of a car, the engine is like a human heart. However, the size and structure of different people's hearts are not very different, but the internal structure of different cars' engines is very different.
Don't have too many cylinders.
With the increase of the number of cylinders, the components of the engine will increase correspondingly, and the structure of the engine will become more complicated, which will also reduce the reliability of the engine and increase the manufacturing cost and later maintenance cost of the engine. Therefore, the cylinder number of automobile engine is selected after comprehensive weighing according to the purpose and performance requirements of the engine. V 12, W 12 and W 16 engines are only used in a few high-performance vehicles.
In fact, the simple understanding of V-engine is to combine adjacent cylinders at a certain angle, which looks like a V-shape from the side. This is the V-engine. Compared with the in-line engine, the height and length of the V-type engine are reduced, which can make the hood lower and meet the aerodynamic requirements. On the other hand, the cylinders of V-type engine are arranged at opposite angles, which can offset part of the vibration, but the disadvantage is that two cylinder heads must be used and the structure is relatively complicated. Although the height of the engine is reduced, its width is correspondingly increased, so it is not easy to install other devices for the engine compartment with fixed space.
W-type engine structure
The cylinders on both sides of the V-engine are staggered by a small angle, which is the W-engine. Compared with V-type engine, W-type engine has the advantages of shorter crankshaft and lighter weight, but its width will increase accordingly, and the engine compartment will be fuller. The disadvantage is that the W-type engine is divided into two parts in structure, and the structure is complicated, so it will produce great vibration when running, so it is only used in a few cars.
+horizontally opposed engine structure
Horizontally opposed engine can be understood as expanding the included angle of V-type engine to 180, so that the adjacent cylinders are arranged oppositely (the bottom of the piston faces outwards), and horizontally opposed engine is formed. The advantages are that it can well counteract the vibration and make the engine run more smoothly; The center of gravity is low, and the front can be designed lower to meet the aerodynamic requirements; The direction of the power output shaft is consistent with the direction of the transmission shaft, and the power transmission efficiency is high. Disadvantages: complicated structure and inconvenient maintenance; The production process is demanding and the production cost is high. Only Porsche and Subaru still insist on using horizontally opposed engine in famous brands of cars.
