Tianjin Textile Institute, formerly known as Tianjin Textile Institute of Technology, was founded in 1940. In 2000, in order to meet the needs of the development of higher education, Tianjin Textile Vocational and Technical College was restructured into an undergraduate college and renamed Tianjin Textile Institute.

The reason for changing its name is to better adapt to the development of the times, expand disciplines, strengthen the service of local economic construction, and improve the comprehensive strength of the school. Renaming has also brought about structural adjustment and discipline layout adjustment. The school has 14 colleges, covering five disciplines: arts, science, engineering, management and arts, covering textile, clothing, chemical industry, machinery, materials and other professional fields, aiming at making greater contributions to the national modernization and local economic development.
