As one of the six universities' teacher training centers in China, it is directly under the leadership of the Personnel Department of the Ministry of Education and the guidance of Beijing Center and Wuhan University's teacher training and exchange center, and is under the management of Southwest University. Southwest Center has successively established four provincial-level training centers in Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and Chongqing, forming a network system for training college teachers in southwest China.

After many institutional reforms and adjustments, Southwest Center co-located with Southwest Education Management Cadre Training Center of the Ministry of Education, Southwest Branch of Central Agricultural Cadre Education and Training Center, National Primary and Secondary School Key Teacher Training Base, National Sports Art Teacher Training Base, Chongqing University Teacher Training Center, Chongqing Primary and Secondary School Key Teacher Training Base and Southwest University Literacy Education Research and Training Center. At present, the center has 28 full-time staff, including 8 full-time teaching and research personnel; There are 3 teaching, office and accommodation buildings with a construction area of 7,500 square meters, which can provide accommodation for more than 500 students at the same time; There are 250 square meters of professional reference rooms 1 room, more than 2000 books1room and more than 200 kinds of periodicals and magazines. Dedicated multimedia classrooms 1 room that can accommodate 250 people at the same time, 2 multimedia classrooms with more than 100 people and 3 ordinary classrooms that can accommodate about 60 people; There are 3 large and small conference rooms; Computer room/kloc-more than 0/20, three computer rooms. The newly renovated college dining hall can accommodate more than 300 people at the same time.

The center adheres to the principles of "three adaptations, two transformations", "realistic service, innovation and upgrading", makes full use of the advantages of teachers and subject resources relying on Southwest University of Chongqing, universities in Southwest China and national key universities, develops and innovates, pays attention to quality, bases itself on Chongqing, serves the southwest and faces the whole country. By the end of 2005, the center had trained more than 20,300 domestic visiting scholars, key teachers' refresher courses, master's degree courses, teaching assistant refresher courses, special seminars, short-term courses, postgraduate courses, single subject refresher courses and pre-job training.

During the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period, Southwest Center is determined to further enhance its awareness of innovation, efficiency, service, struggle and dedication, and make great efforts to train the words "structure, quality, scale and benefit". On the basis of consolidating and perfecting the existing training contents and forms, it will strive to open up new ways for teachers' in-service education, train more subject backbones and subject leaders for universities in Southwest China, and optimize the structure.
