The play is based on Yin Yunling and Jiao's biography, which is only recognized by Jiao's wife, Comrade Xu Junya.

After receiving the title, the screenwriter He Xiangjiu walked in Jiao Youlu's footsteps for more than four months, traveled all over Lankao and went deep into life. He went to his hometown Boshan Village, Zibo City, Shandong Province, and visited Harbin Institute of Technology, Luoyang Mining Machinery Factory (now citic heavy industries Group) and Weishi County, Henan Province, where Jiao studied and worked. Before his death, Jiao Youlu interviewed more than 65,438 villagers, comrades-in-arms, colleagues and leaders. After the interview, He Xiangjiu worked behind closed doors for half a year and finished the literary script of the play.

After the screenwriter He Xiangjiu finished the first draft of the literary script, he invited Jiao Shouyun's second daughter, Jiao Shouyun's second sister to review it, and got her approval and signature on her power of attorney. He also distributed the script to comrades in Lankao, Shandong and Luokuang, with a wide range of contents and received some suggestions for revision. The script was changed 12 times and revised 4 times. More than 40 national first-class actors participated in the play.

Jiao Shouyun, the second daughter of Jiao, trained the actors, and Jiao Shouyun accompanied the crew to participate in the creation. Jiao Youlu's grandson Yu Yin sang the theme song written by his mother Jiao Shouyun for the play. The play started at Harbin Institute of Technology on April 20th11. The crew moved from Harbin to Heihe, Qinghe, Luoyang, Lankao and Zibo. After more than three months of filming, on July 6 of the same year, Jiao's hometown was sealed in Gubei Village, Boshan District, Zibo City, Shandong Province.
