The toeic score is 990. Candidates use pencils to answer on the computer answer sheet. The test score is determined by the number of correct answers, and then the number of correct answers in each major category (listening and reading) is converted into a score of 5 to 495. The total score of these two categories is between 10 and 990.

For example, if a multinational company wants to recruit a cleaner, the applicant may only need a TOEIC score of 20, because their job does not require high English communication skills. If a company wants to recruit a marketing manager, it may need a TOEIC score of up to 900.

Development and application

Government departments in Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and other countries use toeic to evaluate the English communication ability of civil servants and new employees. In China's top 500 global enterprises, a considerable number of enterprises have established their own evaluation system of English communication ability through toeic examination as an internal standard for talent recruitment, promotion, overseas employment and staff training.
