1942 In September, the Japanese ship lisbon maru escorted 1800 British prisoners of war from Hongkong to Japan. 1 01October1day, the ship was torpedoed off Zhoushan and sank the next day. All the prisoners in the cabin fell into the water.
Fishermen from China, such as Qingbang Island, Miaozihu Island and Xifushan Island, found this situation, and all residents immediately rowed for rescue. 384 prisoners of war were rescued from the sea and survived the drowning. After landing, although the life of local fishermen was very hard, they tried their best to provide clothes and accommodation for these British prisoners of war and gave them meticulous care to survive.
The next day, when the fishermen began to discuss how to safely transfer these allied prisoners of war, the Japanese army had sent gunboats to surround the island, and heavily armed Japanese soldiers boarded the island and searched from house to house. In order not to bring trouble to the good people of China, British prisoners of war left their homes consciously, and most of them were taken away.
Local fishermen are still risking their lives to hide three British officers Evans, Farah and johnstone in the cave. After several twists and turns, at the beginning of 1943, they arrived in Chongqing safely and made their experiences public through newspapers. Thanks to the people of China, these simple Zhoushan fishermen bravely saved them from death at the critical moment.
