Project management is not only a knowledge, but also an art. In my mind, every project is an artistic creation, so I love it with my heart!
I am now the project manager of a software company in Beijing. Two years ago, like many college graduates, I had a "fire" in my heart, but I was confused by all kinds of life. After numerous interviews, failures and re-interviews, I finally started my career as a small programmer in a software company. Young I am full of ambition, determined to make achievements in my work, find the direction of future career development, and realize the value of life. Because of my hard-working spirit, I was quickly appreciated and reused by the department manager, and participated in several projects as the technical backbone of the department.
During this period, of course, the biggest gain is the ability of personal programming, creating value for the company while solving one problem after another and experiencing the satisfaction of success. But after a long time, when technical problems are no longer challenging to me, or I can't be satisfied with technical success (I think most programmers should be like me), it's time to think about how to "promote". After analyzing my personality, blood type, constellation and type 9 personality, I finally found the direction of my career, and finally summed it up for reference only.
First, technology turns to sales (becoming an excellent salesperson): it is inconsistent with personality.
Second, the technical depth (to become an excellent technical manager): inconsistent with ambition.
Third, technology to management (becoming an excellent project manager): as the first step of promotion.
After the direction is determined, we must do the right thing and make unremitting efforts towards the goal. So the question now is how to become an excellent project manager.
Among the projects I have participated in, the scale of the projects varies, but I don't know why. Although I worked hard to complete the task assigned by the project manager, my colleagues also made a lot of efforts and painstaking efforts, but the result was very disappointing. In every project, the only constant is the continuous spread of the project scope, the repeated delay of the scheduled construction period and the repeated breakthrough of the budget. Small projects are postponed for two or three months, and large projects are postponed for six months or even longer. Typical project failure! After communicating with the project manager, department manager and even company boss, we still haven't found a solution to these problems, and everyone is indifferent to it. What's more, we put forward a reason: According to incomplete statistics, the failure rate of IT projects in the United States is as high as 70%, even in the United States where modern management is perfect, not to mention that we are in China where project management is still immature. Can't IT projects avoid these problems? Are these problems "force majeure" of IT industry? The answer is no.
I don't believe that these problems can't be solved, perhaps because of my personality, I was appreciated by the company leaders and was promoted to project manager. In order to solve these problems, I consulted a lot of information. As the saying goes, flowers should not bloom intentionally, and willows should not be planted unintentionally. I came across a course on practical experience of project management in China organized by Halo International Management Training Company, and the teacher was Professor Qiang Mao Shan from Tsinghua University. This course has benefited me a lot. "Planning is the core of project management, and control is the key to project management". Using WBS to decompose the project, making an executable work plan according to the decomposed work, and then controlling the plan is to strictly control the critical path in the plan. According to the process, the above problems have been greatly improved.
Having found the goal and direction, I fell in love with project management because I like challenges. The satisfaction after success cannot be described by joy. The important thing is that I have taken the first step! I am full of hope for the future, and I will meet greater challenges (PMP). I believe that opportunities are only for those who are prepared.
