The hospital has a long history and a deep foundation. 1955, founded by the Central South Bureau, mobilized 168 medical backbones from Shanghai Medical College and Hunan Xiangya Medical College to form a 300-bed work team. It is one of the earliest and larger medical institutions in Wuhan.
In order to support the national defense construction, the hospital was ordered to roll across Sichuan, Guizhou and Guangdong, and transferred back to Wuhan on 1975 to rebuild the hospital on Luoshi Road in Wuchang. The main medical building is shaped like a "7" with five floors, with an area of 1 1453 square meters and 260 beds. It was renamed Wuhan Overseas Chinese Hospital and Wuhan Institute of Hematology. The development of more than 50 years has formed an innovative, firm and practical cultural atmosphere.
The hospital has 56 sets of large medical equipment such as color B-ultrasound, DR, digital photographic X-ray machine, automatic biochemical analyzer, dialyzer, arthroscope, laparoscopy, pelvic mirror, microsurgery mirror, holmium laser and plasma knife. In the rescue of complex traumatic fractures, surgical treatment of old fracture nonunion, replantation of severed fingers and limbs, thumb (toe) reconstruction, bone tumor treatment, knee and shoulder arthroscopy surgery, artificial joint replacement, cervical spondylosis, lumbago and leg pain, etc., remarkable achievements have been made in various angiography, interventional therapy, heart failure and stroke treatment. According to the evaluation of Hubei Science and Technology Commission, three scientific research achievements are leading in China, and the hospital has formed medical characteristics mainly in orthopedics and internal medicine, and some disciplines have reached the medical level of third-class first-class hospitals.
The hospital is based on 500,000 residents of Nanhu Lake and faces Wuhan and surrounding cities. In 2007, the number of outpatient visits in the hospital was 187436, and the number of inpatients was 4 169.
The hospital has been successively rated as "the Third Bureau Civilized Hospital", "Wuhan Advanced Health Unit", "Wuhan Civilized Hospital" and "Hubei Advanced Logistics Unit for Construction Workers".
