Feng Jizhong's detailed experience
Born in a prominent family, I was exposed to the essence of Chinese studies from an early age.

Feng Jizhong was born in a prominent family. Grandfather was the governor of Zhejiang Province. Because he opposed swallowing gold in the Revolution of 1911, the Qing emperor named him "Zhong", hence the name. Feng Fu used to be Xu Shichang's secretary. From the age of 3 to 1 1, Feng Jizhong studied in the primary school of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing and speaks a Beijing accent.

Noble families in that era were all married like the families in A Dream of Red Mansions, and the Feng family was inextricably linked with Xu Shichang, Liang Qichao and Lin Zexu. Interestingly, although Liang Sicheng and Liang Sicheng later became the pioneers of the "one south and one north" architectural school respectively, some students now delve into history and find that Feng Heliang lived in a courtyard of Dongtangzi Hutong at that time. In other words, Liang Sicheng, who was still in middle school at that time, probably lived under the same roof as Feng Jizhong, an infant. "Now think about it, this is really possible." Feng Jizhong said with a smile.

Feng Jizhong was born in a scholarly family and was influenced by Chinese studies since he was a child. His father and uncle are both non-commissioned officers, and their knowledge of ancient Chinese is excellent. My grandfather specially invited an old scholar to teach Chinese studies. Even the Beijing Foreign Ministry Primary School, Shanghai Nanyang Model Primary School and St. John's High School, where he attended, were all taught by China. Anyone who has read Feng Jizhong's Answer to the Question of He Louxuan is all surprised by the architect's solid knowledge of ancient China literature. Anyone who knows his background knows that this is a knowledge of Chinese studies accumulated since childhood.

Until 1980s, after Feng Jizhong retired, he lived in the United States for more than ten years. In his spare time, he began to study Qu Yuan's Songs of the South and translate ancient poems. Feng Jizhong's profound understanding of China's traditional culture was finally brought into full play in his masterpiece Fangta Garden.

During my study in St. John's high school and university, my interests are more extensive, such as painting, drama, diligent calligraphy, and appreciation of Mei Lanfang and Cheng's Peking Opera. Among my friends in high school and college, my names are I.M. Pei and Hu. Bei and Hu later went to the United States to study, but went to Europe.

Survived the plane shooting in World War II and saved a life.

1936, Feng Jizhong and his menstruation arrived in Vienna by boat. At that time, most students from China were in Berlin, and Feng Jizhong was the only student from China in Vienna University of Technology. At that time, the Nazis were in power, Austria was occupied by Germany, and Feng Jizhong studied abroad for ten years, which happened to be in the depths of the European battlefield. Many students disappeared in class because of the war. Some people were recruited by the Germans, climbed out of the dead, and came back crazy. Some people joined the * * * production party to resist the Germans in the war. These surviving students have a special feeling for each other.

Vienna was bombed at the end of the war. Feng Jizhong later taught his daughter Feng Ye survival skills: When the plane comes, if it shoots at you, you stand against the wall! "We all sound interesting. We talk like a class. Who will encounter such a thing? " Feng Ye said with a smile, but at that time, Feng Jizhong put it on the wall and saved his life. Later, there were holes in the wall around him. Life was hard during the war. Feng Jizhong ate beans with worms and came back with stomach trouble.

Also affected is research. Although Feng Jizhong had graduated when the school closed, his initial doctoral thesis was about an old building in Vienna. The building had been surveyed, but it was bombed in the war, and his doctoral thesis was also lost. Therefore, Feng Jizhong didn't want to mention that he was actually studying for a doctorate.

During the period of 1946, a large number of overseas students returned to China, many of whom later became elites from all walks of life. For example, the two pioneers of surgical medicine in China, Fu Peibin and Qiu Fazu, Zheng, an international civil law guru, and painters, returned with the same boat. During the five-month waiting period in Switzerland, Feng Jizhong, Ji Xianlin, Huang Zheng and others all lived in the same temple. Throughout the year, Feng Jizhong said that he spent all his time "running, waiting and traveling". After a full 84-day trip, Feng Jizhong, who studied abroad for ten years, finally returned to his hometown. The first thing he did when he set foot in the house was to kneel on the ground and kowtow to his mother and go back to his hometown in Henan. He also kowtowed to his adoptive mother who raised him. "Respect people, or follow the rules of China."

The square tower garden of architectural design has become a model of combining Chinese and western.

Feng Jizhong and I.M. Pei, two high school friends with similar family backgrounds, have embarked on completely different life paths. I.M. Pei is very famous in America and has become a world-famous architect. Feng Jizhong's endless creative thoughts are constantly impressed by China's special reality.

During the period of Nanjing National Government, Feng Jizhong worked in Nanjing Planning Commission for two years, and went to Shanghai from 65438 to 0948. He has taught in Shanghai Jiaotong University and Tongji University successively, and participated in Shanghai planning in Shanghai Planning Commission. The concept of "organic evacuation" put forward by him divides Shanghai into functional areas separated by green belts, which is the earliest modern urban planning theory in China.

In the early 1950s, Feng Jizhong had a small creative peak. His most proud works are Wuhan tongji hospital and Donghu Hotel. The former has a clear structure and novel conception, and its architectural model was later imitated by many hospitals. East Lake Hotel is Mao Zedong's residence in Wuhan, which is very popular in Mao Zedong. Unfortunately, it was demolished at will and did not get the protection it deserved.

In the following decades, Feng Jizhong's creation was constantly impacted by the special political environment in China. Due to various non-architectural reasons, many of his schemes were eventually rejected or "merged" with other schemes, such as Tongji University Center Building, Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Southwest Moscow Planning, State Guesthouse Design, Beijing Library and so on.

"In the fifties, the firm was not allowed to open, so we got a design institute. From the establishment of the design institute to the design, there are fewer and fewer. I can't do it anymore. I basically want to do design. No design is sad, and design is happy. " Feng Jizhong recalled.

After the reform and opening up, Feng Jizhong can finally use his favorite designs again. Soon, the essence of his life-long architectural concept was realized in Fangta Garden, an open-air museum recognized as a world-class work. The original site of Shanghai Songjiang Pagoda Garden is an ancient pagoda in the Song Dynasty, which is not on the same axis as the screen wall in the Ming Dynasty, while Feng Jizhong combines ancient buildings with modern gardens. In addition, he also built a "Helouxuan" with simple materials such as bamboo and thatch for the public to rest, which became the finishing touch. "The shape of the hut is inspired by the local houses, but its curve is the baroque style of the west. Almost everyone will like the perfect combination of oriental tradition and western classicism. Although He Louxuan is not big, it has opened up a brand-new concept of space, which is as important as the Bauhaus model and the German Pavilion of the Barcelona World Expo. " Zhao Bing, the first dean of the School of Urban Architecture of Wuhan University, said.

Wang Mingxian, deputy director of the Institute of Architecture of China Academy of Fine Arts, liked this architectural structure at first sight. "It is not easy for him to make such a wonderful world masterpiece step by step under such difficult conditions." Fangta Garden has won Feng Jizhong an international reputation. 1986 In the second half of the year, the American Architectural Association awarded Mr. Feng the title of honorary academician of the American Institute of Architects, and I.M. Pei sent a congratulatory message. Unfortunately, due to various reasons, Feng Jizhong was still unable to carry out more architectural practice, and then he went to live in the United States for ten years.

Nowadays, many people in the field of architecture believe that the origin of European architectural modernism has developed into two lines. One is Bauhaus, which is developing rapidly in America. However, Bauhaus generally ignored history and was criticized by postmodernism. However, another modernism, that is, Feng Jizhong's alma mater, Vienna University of Technology, has been repeatedly mentioned today. This modernist school pays more attention to the integration of modernity and history, and the combination of architecture and planning. This modern architectural concept was first introduced from Feng Jizhong to China, which can be said to have changed the whole picture of architectural planning in China.

1952 Feng Jizhong established the major of urban construction and management in Tongji, and 1956 officially approved it. This is not only the first independent urban planning major in China, but also only three or four architectural colleges and universities in the world at that time, and it was more than 20 years before other colleges and universities in China began to offer this major. With the development of socialist industrialization, reform and opening up and urbanization in China for so many years, a large number of students in Tongji have taken on the heavy responsibility of urban planning in various departments.

In the late 1970s, Feng Jizhong took his students to explore the transformation of the old city. Based on the people-oriented thought, he preserved the historical features of the city in the essence of respecting people, which was unanimously recognized by the academic circles.

During the Cultural Revolution, Lin Fengmian was imprisoned for four years, and the Feng family always gave him quilts, food and other items. Feng Ye, a close disciple of Lin Fengmian, said that his father often talked with Lin Fengmian about art and history, and sometimes chatted while cooking in the kitchen. They have close friends' trust and promote their own artistic ideas. From the outside world, there are Xu Beihong and Liang Sicheng in China's art and architecture circles in the north, and Lin Fengmian and Feng Jizhong in the south, which respectively represent the humanistic spirit and modern spirit different from the north.

Decades ago, the head of the department was similar to the position of dean of the Art Institute, and it could be said that he was the head of a school. From 1955 to 1986, Feng Jizhong worked as a department head for 30 years. But he was too lonely at the top and was crushed almost every time in previous political struggles. During the Cultural Revolution, his design of fish watching in Huagang was criticized, and a university president was ordered to stop work. Feng Ye still remembers that when he was a child, he saw his emaciated father "tearing all over, splashing red ink and hitting people very badly" and went home.

Feng Jizhong has been teaching for 60 years and has trained generations of architectural talents. I'm afraid all his students have entered old age. He said that the proudest work in his life was to bring out so many students.
