The focus of Li Chengming's theoretical research is geographic information system (GIS), which has covered almost all major research directions and achieved rich theoretical research results.

1. In the field of GIS spatial relationship research, he is responsible for completing the "Research on Some Basic Theoretical Issues of Voronoi Spatial Data Model", reaching the international advanced level. The nine-intersection mathematical model (NIV for short) and 4-Adj model based on Voronoi diagram are put forward, which ideologically breaks through the limitation that "the study of spatial relationship only considers the spatial object itself and ignores the space occupied by the spatial object". Based on this, the published academic monograph Voronoi Principles and Methods of Spatial Relationship Description systematically discusses the formal description and mathematical expression of spatial relationship cognition. This book puts forward a feasible theory and method of dynamic reasoning of dynamic data structure and spatial relationship for the research of dynamic GIS.

2. In the research field of dynamic GIS, the concepts and differences of mobile GIS, mobile GIS and dynamic GIS are systematically discussed earlier, the architecture of dynamic GIS is put forward, the hierarchical and block data physical storage structure and its implementation algorithm suitable for portable intelligent terminals are designed, and the prototype systems of PDA, GSM, GIS and GPS are developed, which enriches the theoretical and practical achievements of dynamic GIS in China.

3. In the field of 3D GIS research, under the direct leadership of Dean Lin Zongjian, the single-chip multi-image stereo measurement technology and method based on UAV are proposed, which solves the "bottleneck" of 3D digital city data acquisition. At the same time, the formal description and expression of the real world, the division of spatial entities and data organization have been studied, and a 3D GIS software platform based on full component technology has been developed, forming a complete theoretical and technical system from data collection, efficient measurement, modeling, 3D GIS to the application of 3D digital city construction.

4. In the research field of population geographic information system, the necessity of combining population information with geographic information is systematically discussed. On the basis of summarizing the demonstration experience of statistical population geographic information system and public security household registration geographic information system, this paper puts forward the technical methods of regular spatial distribution (DPM: digital population geographic model) and irregular spatial distribution of population information, as well as the theory and method of design, establishment and application of population GIS. In the field of data mining, combined with the characteristics of spatial data, a theoretical system of spatial data mining with three levels and three fields is proposed. Taking1:250,000 topographic map data as an example, the depth mining of time domain, spatial domain and attribute domain is carried out, and good theoretical research results are obtained, which provides reference for spatial data mining research.

5. In the research field of aerial survey and remote sensing, the high-precision fusion of 1: 10000 aerial image and 15m resolution TM image is explored. Completed the project "The Impact of Data Compression on Image Quality" funded by the Hong Kong government, which reached the international level, and published an academic paper in Geographic Information Science, and put forward an internationally recognized evaluation system and method for image data compression.

6. In the field of urban GIS research, the theory and framework of "fine urban GIS" and "orthophoto GIS" are put forward, which breaks through the traditional framework of urban GIS at home and abroad. On this basis, they took charge of public security household registration in the project of "China Population GIS Technical Support System" of the State Planning Commission, and participated in the roving exhibition of scientific and technological achievements in the Ninth Five-Year Plan of the Ministry of Public Security, which achieved good social and economic benefits. At present, it has undertaken projects such as "Digital Weihai" and "Digital Yiwu", and has rich practice and innovation in the construction of digital cities and digital regions.

7. In the field of digital cities, we took the lead in building the geospatial framework of national digital cities, and stimulated local financial investment to exceed 654.38 billion. Security processing and * * * sharing technology gave birth to the navigation industry in China, providing more than 600,000 navigation plug-ins every year, forming an annual industrial scale of 654.38+0.2 billion. The developed software has been applied to the logistics system of the whole army, which provides a strong space support for the national defense information construction.
