Literature source refers to the specific information of other documents cited in research papers or other academic works. Literature (pinyin wén xiàn), a Chinese word, means books, periodicals and laws with historical significance or research value.

It is the most authoritative biomedical literature database in the world. The contents include all the contents of American Medical Index (IM), as well as some contents of dental literature index and international nursing index.

MEDLINE has collected more than 3,400 biomedical journals published in more than 70 countries and regions since 1966, with nearly 9.6 million records. At present, 300,000-350,000 records are reported in the form of titles and abstracts every year, of which 75% are English documents and 70%-80% have English abstracts.

By the end of 1988, about 20 organizations were approved to convert MEDLINE database and distribute MEDLINE CD products, including Silver Platter, Cambridge, Dialog, etc. Although the retrieval functions, retrieval instructions and data structures of the products of the above companies are basically similar, they are also different.
