The Creative Background of Diary of a Madman

19 15, Chen Duxiu founded Youth Magazine, which was regarded as the beginning of the New Culture Movement. 19 16, Youth magazine was renamed as New Youth, and the following year, Hu Shi's Literary Improvement and Chen Duxiu's On Literary Revolution were published. These two articles caused a sensation in the domestic cultural circles and were regarded as essays of the New Culture Movement.

As early as when Lu Xun was studying in Japan, he had the idea of transforming national character with literature and art, and took many practical actions. His articles published ten years ago, such as the history of mankind, the theory of cultural deviation, the teaching of the history of science, and the theory of Moro poetry, are basically consistent with the contents of the New Culture Movement.

19 17 On August 9, at the invitation of Qian, Lu Xun agreed to write an article for New Youth, and finished the creation of Diary of a Madman on April 19 18. Before writing Diary of a Madman, Lu Xun had read about one hundred foreign literary works.

Diary of a Madman is the first cry of Lu Xun after experiencing silence and reflection. His works incorporate his complex emotions such as anger, resentment, dissatisfaction, anxiety, hope and prayer over the years. It must also reflect the author's deep thinking about the history of China and his understanding of the real society over the years. It is a thorough anti-feudal "declaration" and the "general preface" of the author's subsequent creation.
