Matters needing attention and writing skills in academic paper writing
Based on my experience in studying in the United States, I would like to ask you some common-sense questions about writing and try to avoid them. I hope it will be beneficial to your future exams and even your long trip to study in the United States. Time is limited, it is impossible to finish all of them, but I will keep adding. There are also those fragments quoted in the article, which are not intended to attack the author, but are just taken out to discuss with you. I hope the cited author can understand,

1. Avoid rhetorical and rhetorical questions. In particular, the author has no answer to this question.

What is the purpose of information? Is it to make people more confused and go astray? I partially agree with the author's point of view that huge and useless information sometimes makes people lose their way and can't think deeply and creatively.

Two questions are thrown at the beginning of the composition, and then the following statement has nothing to do with the questions. As a reader, we should first consider what are the answers to those two questions, and then we can continue reading. These good words and sentences, which may be rated as "fascinating" in Chinese, can be said to be one of the biggest failures in English thesis writing. If you must ask a question, change it to a declarative sentence, such as when is this question right or wrong? This is a controversial issue. .....

2. Avoid centralized use of "Be" verbs, including is, are, has, been, etc.

Even if there are many "Be" verbs in GRE sentences, you should avoid copying them, because the sentences tell you an idea in a simple way, not show you the writing.

For example, what is the purpose of education? Some people may say that the purpose of education should be to create an academic environment completely isolated from the outside world, because they believe that this situation enables students to concentrate on their academic research work without being disturbed by practical problems. In fact, this suggestion is harmful to scientific research.

This is the beginning of an article. We only analyze grammar now. Besides being careful not to use interrogative sentences, the author also has a very important point: there are always two or three sentences and four "be" verbs appear. This writing is called "inaction" verb in English. "Be" only means a state, such as "I am here" and "You are there". For native speakers, the verb "Be" is actually written on paper without any emotional color. So try to avoid using it in the article. Our example can be changed to:

Some people think that the purpose of education is to create an academic environment completely isolated from the outside world. They believe that this situation allows students to exclude external interference from practical problems, thus focusing on academic research. However, this proposal is actually harmful to scientific research.

We can see that this sentence has become more colorful after using "lie", "exclusion" and "injury".

3. Try to avoid using words or phrases repeatedly. Especially when you concentrate on one or two sentences at close range.

For example, the author believes that to understand one's own culture, one must at least know another culture that is completely different from one's own. As far as I'm concerned, I can't agree with the author.

At the beginning of this one, there are always two lines, but there are four cultures of one and three in succession. If you read this passage out loud, you will find it awkward and funny. The continuous use of the same words or phrases (including short sentences) reflects the author's lack of vocabulary, poor writing style and poor ability to choose words and make sentences. The reader feels sleepy.

We can easily correct it: the author believes that understanding another different culture helps us to truly understand our own culture. Anyway, I don't agree with this assertion.

This sentence combines the original three clauses into one, and there is no lengthy feeling. While streamlining, it also appropriately avoids the problem of reusing culture. Using "this assertion" also avoids using two "authors" at close range.

4. Avoid using long sentences with clauses.

Academic articles should avoid pursuing flowery words and sentence patterns. As non-native speakers, we are already at a disadvantage in language sense. In order to avoid many small mistakes in grammar and sentence structure caused by lack of language sense, we should try to avoid using long sentences. After reading many authors' articles, the consequences of long sentences usually include: confusion between single and plural, unclear reference between it and that, inconsistent tense at both ends of clauses, wrong connecting prepositions and so on.

For example, what happened in the past, called history, is our great wealth. Only by studying the past can we gain valuable experience as a means to guide the development of our society.

In the example, the author uses three commas, but in fact, the relationship between clauses is not inseparable. It is easy for us to divide it into three sentences. Only when the author writes with peace of mind and the reader reads comfortably can the truth be said and done.

History is made up of what happened in the past, and it is a great wealth of mankind. Only by thoroughly studying the past can we gain valuable experience from history. Historical experience is a means to guide the new development of society.

5. Avoid cliches and other nonsense.

For example, in order to get a satisfactory grade, students must always prepare and review their texts, keep all the knowledge they have learned in mind, and expand their knowledge if possible, especially when the exam is coming. All these efforts, no matter what the purpose, are bound to be rewarded accordingly.

The sentence "whatever their purpose is" in the paragraph has no substantive meaning in the whole context, which is totally nonsense.
