Based on the verbal humor in the first season of Young Sheldon, this paper combines verbal humor with applied linguistics and analyzes the typical verbal humor in the play by using Grice's cooperative principle. By explaining the conditions and mechanism of verbal humor, this paper analyzes examples with relevant linguistic theories to help the audience better understand the humor production mechanism of American sitcoms. Finally, the article will provide some reference for how to use humor correctly in daily life.
Little Sheldon is a derivative drama of The Big Bang Theory, which mainly tells a series of stories about Sheldon's childhood and family life in Texas, and shows the growing pains of young Sheldon. The play continues to tell the story of this talented boy from another dimension. Guided by the cooperative principle, this paper analyzes the verbal humor produced by violating the cooperative principle in Little Sheldon.
