In the thirty-sixth year of the Republic of China (1947), he joined the party in Nanjing from 10, engaged in scientific and technological revolution activities, and was one of the few underground party member in China.
At the end of the thirty-seventh year of the Republic of China (1948), Shi Yafeng was ordered to collect a batch of information on the Yangtze River current, velocity and waterway. It was not until the 1980s that Shi Yafeng realized that these materials provided an important operational reference for Erye to cross the river.
From 65438 to 0949, after the liberation of Nanjing, Shi Yafeng participated in the establishment of the monthly magazine Geographical Knowledge.
From 65438 to 0953, he was transferred to Beijing and served as an associate researcher at the Institute of Geography, China Academy of Sciences, engaged in the study of geomorphological zoning.

Shi Yafeng, who is over 90 years old, put forward two suggestions to Wen Jiabao, one of which is to strengthen democratic elections at the grassroots level, hoping that the central leadership will accelerate the pace of China's political reform.
On March 20 10, Shi Yafeng, an octogenarian, was admitted to the hospital because of the aggravation of heart failure. Although he often suffered from a series of pains such as vomiting and constipation caused by heart failure, he still insisted on completing the review of the New Theory of Quaternary Glaciers in China in his hospital bed and wrote the article Review of the Establishment and Popularization of Debris Flow Scientific Research.
2011February 13 18: 35 died in Jiangsu provincial hospital at the age of 93.
Major achievements
achievements in scientific research
Shi Yafeng initiated and promoted the research on glacier physics, glacier hydrology, ice core and environment, ice and snow disasters and Quaternary glaciers in China, systematically developed China's glaciology theory, and pushed China's glaciology research to the forefront of the world.
Shi Yafeng visited and took the lead in compiling the glacier investigation report and comprehensive monograph of Qilian Mountain, Tianshan Mountain, Himalayan Mountain and Karakorum Mountain. The change of Batola Glacier in Karakorum Mountain is predicted, and the traffic scheme of China-Pakistan Highway is determined. The remains and characteristics of the Little Ice Age, the Last Ice Age and the Maximum Ice Age in the western mountainous areas of China are put forward.
In terms of geomorphology and Quaternary geology, Shi Yafeng participated in and led the study of geomorphological zoning in China in 1950s, and was responsible for the zoning of North China and Northwest China and the compilation of geomorphological maps. He first pointed out the location and characteristics of the remains of the Little Ice Age and the Last Ice Age in the mountainous areas of western China, which were confirmed by the age data of 14C. Preliminary suggestions on ice age division and comparison in several mountainous areas in western China are put forward. In 1980s, he and his collaborators put forward the view that the middle and low mountains in eastern China, such as Lushan Mountain, have no Quaternary glaciers. From the perspective of historical geography and history of science, this paper probes into the historical process of economic and social development in eastern Sichuan and western Hubei. He also initiated and participated in the editing of the Collected Works of Zhu Kezhen.

Personality assessment
Murray, President of International Glacier: He is a fascinating scientist. He introduced glaciers and glacier research in China to the world.
Academician Liu Dongsheng: First of all, Mr. Shi is a revolutionary full of passion and dedication, a native of party member, an innovative scientific leader and a scientific practitioner who has been struggling for a long time in glacier research. His spirit of selfless dedication, continuous innovation and diligent practice is worth learning by scientific workers, especially teenagers. He is far-sighted in scientific work. He can not only win many elders to join his scientific team, but also cultivate many young people. He is a representative of China intellectuals in an era.
Researcher Wang Tao, Director of Institute of Cold and Drought, Chinese Academy of Sciences: Mr. Wang is a pioneer in the study of modern glaciers, frozen soil and mudslides in China. He led and promoted the research on glacier physics, glacier hydrology, ice core and environment, ice and snow disasters and Quaternary glaciers in China, systematically developed glaciology theory, and laid the foundation for China's glacier science to rank among the forefront of glacier research in the world. Glacier permafrost initiated by Mr. Wang has played an important role in the rational utilization of water resources, the prevention and control of debris flow and ice and snow disasters and major engineering construction in cold areas of China, with far-reaching influence and huge social, economic and ecological benefits. Mr. Wang has always been committed to serving the country's construction and development, always insisting on reform and innovation, and always playing a leading and exemplary role in the development of science and technology.
Director of the front yard of Lanzhou Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences: Shi Lao has always been an example for us to learn. As the founder of the Institute of Glaciology and Frozen Soil, Mr. Wang proposed the name of the new institute from the perspective of career development-Institute of Environment and Engineering in Cold and Arid Areas, which pointed out the direction for our development. Shi Lao has a keen academic vision. The research on cryosphere and global change, which he personally practiced a long time ago, has become a hot spot in global change research. Therefore, we should learn from Shi Lao and look forward to the development of our cause.
Academician, Institute of Cold and Drought Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences: The scientific research on cold and drought in China initiated by Mr. Wang started in Gansu, which not only benefited the western region, but also made an important contribution to Gansu's economic construction. Under the leadership of Mr. Wang, Lanzhou has become one of the three major earth science research bases in China (Beijing, Nanjing and Lanzhou) and one of the international research centers of glacier and frozen soil. The research on the ecological environment in western China, represented by the Institute of Drought and Drought, has formed a research system integrating glacier, frozen soil, desert, plateau atmosphere, water and soil resources, ecological agriculture and remote sensing information. As the pioneer and creator of this cause, Mr. Wang's contribution has produced remarkable social benefits, which are beneficial to the present and the future.
Academician, Institute of Cold and Drought Studies, Chinese Academy of Sciences: Mr. Wang's 70-year scientific research career, achievements and contributions are various, mainly including initiating the study of modern glaciology in China and opening the door to international cooperation in glaciology in China.
