Selected paragraph:
A gentleman is poor without loss, tired and tireless, and he never forgets his fine words when he is in trouble. It is not difficult to know pines and cypresses at the age of eighteen, but it is not difficult to know a gentleman every day.
Translation:
A gentleman is poor without losing his ambition, tired without stealing peace, and facing disaster without betraying what he usually says at the dinner table. Years are not cold, I don't know the perseverance of pine and cypress, I don't know the ambition of a gentleman. As a gentleman, not a day goes by without insisting on what you think is right, that is, Tao.
Extended data:
Xunzi Outline is a compilation of Xunzi's remarks by Xunzi students. Each paragraph is short and incoherent, which is different from other argumentative papers, so it is called "outline"
The outline covers a wide range of contents, among which ceremony is still the main discussion issue. It believes that social and political life should be "based on ceremony" and take ceremony as the standard to measure everything. However, it is a development to put forward that "courtesy is based on conforming to the people's will, so everything that conforms to the people's will is courtesy". The Outline contains Xunzi's views in his later years and his later studies, which reflects some changes in Xunzi's thoughts.
