? With the change of information technology, the carrier form of information resources in university libraries has changed greatly, and the coexistence of electronic resources and paper resources has become an indispensable part of library collections. How to correctly grasp the relationship between paper resources and electronic resources, and make them complement and interact with each other, is a new problem that the library community needs to innovate and solve constantly. On the basis of introducing the characteristics of paper resources and electronic resources, this paper discusses their coexistence in the construction and development of library resources.
Introduction to 0
With the change of information technology, the collection structure has also changed from the pattern that paper information resources dominate the world to a new situation in which paper resources and electronic resources coexist. At present, digital libraries have both physical collections based on paper resources and virtual collections based on electronic resources, which complement each other and interact with each other to meet the needs of different users for information resources to the greatest extent. Therefore, paper resources and electronic resources have become the main collections of modern university digital libraries. This paper introduces the characteristics of paper resources and electronic resources, analyzes and probes into their coordinated development, and some problems needing attention in the construction of information resources system of university library.
1 Characteristics of paper resources
Paper resources refer to printed documents such as books, newspapers, periodicals and special documents that we are familiar with. Its main features are:
(1) entity. This is the most basic feature of paper resources, which looks intuitive. (2) storage. Information resources with certain physical media forms need considerable space to be collected and stored, such as reading rooms and stacks in libraries. (3) concentration. In order to facilitate the storage and use of readers, the library places books of the same subject in some places of the library according to certain methods. (4) practicality. Paper resources are available to readers, who can use them by reading, borrowing, copying and interlibrary loan. (5) limitations. Due to the limitation of storage space and funds, libraries can only choose books with quantity and quality when purchasing resources, and no library in the world can collect all paper resources. (6) ownership and permanent use right. Paper resources are mainly obtained by ordering, exchanging and accepting donations. Once the library has the document, it has the permanent use and ownership of the document. (7) collectibility. Because paper resources are not easy to preserve and widely spread, old books will become ancient books or classic books, so they have investment and collection value.
2 characteristics of electronic resources
Electronic resources refer to the network information resources that are paid by the library through signing a contract and stored in the local server or database provider for online free use by readers in the local network, mainly including e-books, periodicals, newspapers, full-text databases, online video resources, etc. Electronic resources mainly have the following characteristics: (1) virtuality. Electronic resources are not an independent entity. They digitalize information resources on the internet for readers to use, and readers don't have to inquire. (2) richness. Abundance is an important feature of virtual collections. Because the Internet has the advantages of wide coverage and large information capacity, the electronic resources based on this condition are also very rich. We can freely query and search the documents we need through the Internet, and even find relevant information. (3) convenience. As electronic resources are not physical carriers, as long as readers have access rights, they can retrieve and access the required documents anytime and anywhere. (4) dispersion. The storage of electronic resources is distributed and stored in the servers and disk arrays of various libraries. (5)*** enjoy. Through the network and electronic resources, the physical collections of libraries all over the world are integrated into one library, which provides the possibility for all mankind to enjoy together and is gradually being realized. (6) Dynamic. Electronic resources are dynamic and random, and they are constantly updated and changing. (7) Non-ownership. The electronic resources of the library only have the right to use the network, and there is no entity and ownership of the information resources. Electronic resources also have many disadvantages, such as high purchasing cost, expensive purchasing cost of servers and disk arrays for storing electronic information resources, which is really unbearable for small and medium-sized libraries.
3 the coordinated development of the two in the construction of information resources system in university libraries
3. 1 Reasonably allocate the proportion of funds needed for purchasing paper resources and electronic resources, and optimize the collection structure.
With the development of information technology, the utilization rate of traditional paper resources in university libraries at home and abroad is declining. At the same time, the storage of paper resources needs to occupy a lot of storage space. However, simply developing electronic resources is expensive and unbearable for ordinary university libraries. The author suggests that university libraries can combine the characteristics of their own schools and disciplines, make use of the different characteristics of the two resources according to the needs of readers, reasonably allocate the proportion of funds needed for purchasing paper resources and electronic resources without increasing too much funds, optimize the collection structure, and alleviate the contradictions brought about by the collection structure while the university library develops and grows.
3.2 Collection and integration of information resources
At present, most university libraries not only have rich printed literature materials, but also have a large number of digital resources. We should give full play to the respective characteristics of paper resources and electronic resources, and reorganize and optimize information resources to facilitate the use of readers or users. The integration of library information resources can be based on the integration of paper resources and electronic resources in the library, or on the integration of resources between libraries in a certain geographical range. University libraries can take the collection bibliographic system (OPAC) as the main body and digital resources as the main body, and integrate them according to disciplines and specialties. The specific integration method depends on the actual situation of each library. Through integration, university libraries can effectively promote the subscription of electronic information resources, greatly improve the efficiency of library work and reader retrieval, truly reflect the transformation of library work from collection-oriented to service-oriented, and contribute to the overall coordination of various departments and libraries.
4 problems that should be paid attention to in the construction of information resources system in university libraries
(1) Correctly understand the enjoyment of resources and attach importance to the construction of information resources in our library. * * * Co-construction and * * * Sharing are the main features of resource construction in the information age. However, the shortage of information resources can only be partially solved by copying or interlibrary loan, and the needs of readers, especially professional needs, should also be met by university libraries' own information resources (especially characteristic collection resources). Therefore, we can't relax the construction of information resources in our library because we enjoy resources.
(2) While grasping the construction of digital resources, we should pay more attention to the construction of paper resources. In the process of library collection resources construction, we should clearly realize the limitations of network information resources. The library only has the right to use online electronic information resources but not the right to file them, and only has the right to use them without ownership. Therefore, how to store and manage network resources is a problem that libraries need to study seriously. In a word, libraries should fully consider and make use of the modern information network environment and attach importance to the construction of digital resources, but at the same time, they should not relax the construction of paper resources.
(3) Copyright issues in the construction of digital resources. Copyright is an important issue in the current resource construction. Libraries should pay attention to the copyright of digital resources in the process of building them, so as to avoid unnecessary disputes.
