Some scholars have suggested that a series of categories emphasized by Scientific Outlook on Development have a strong color of value and actually belong to the category of axiology. Therefore, Scientific Outlook on Development's proposal and systematization further guided our development goals to the level of core values, and revealed Socialism with Chinese characteristics's core values to some extent. In the overall requirements of building a harmonious socialist society, the categories and requirements of democracy and the rule of law, fairness and justice, honesty and friendship, vitality and stability, order and harmony, and harmony between man and nature have distinct value orientations, which are also becoming important categories of Socialism with Chinese characteristics's core values.

Academic circles have different views on the specific content of socialist core values.

One view holds that the core values of socialism include "prosperity, democracy, civilization and harmony" and "free and all-round development of human beings" as the highest values of socialism.

Prosperity, democracy, civilization, harmony and the free and all-round development of human beings cover the basic fields of social life and the four levels of economy, politics, culture and society, which not only embodies the lofty ideal and highest value of socialism, but also reflects the grand goal and overall layout of China's socialist modernization at this stage, embodies the unity of the party's highest and lowest programs, and embodies socialist material civilization, political civilization, spiritual civilization and social civilization.

One view is that Socialism with Chinese characteristics's core values should include development, prosperity, democracy and civilization.

Development is the last word, and development is the top priority in governing and rejuvenating the country. Without development, nothing can be solved and nothing can be satisfied. In this sense, development is the value of Socialism with Chinese characteristics, even one of its core values. Prosperity includes individual prosperity and overall prosperity. The most important value of Socialism with Chinese characteristics should be to create conditions to achieve not only prosperity but also prosperity, so that people's growing material and cultural needs can be better met. Without democracy, there would be no socialism. Therefore, democracy should naturally be one of Socialism with Chinese characteristics's core values. Civilization is a material and spiritual state, which should be achieved by the whole society and needed by all people. So it should be the core value of Socialism with Chinese characteristics. Besides, such things as fairness, justice, friendship, mutual assistance, stability and harmony can all be regarded as Socialism with Chinese characteristics's core values.

Another view holds that the core values of socialism should include humanism, harmony, happiness and sustainability.

Humanism, harmony, happiness and persistence are the core values of socialism, that is, the value goals and standards of socialism. Fully embodies the requirements of human nature. People-oriented, harmony, happiness and sustainability, as the core values of socialism, must be clear in theoretical interpretation. The practice process is staged, realistic and operable. It needs not only the courage and wisdom of thought, but also the courage and art of politics.

There is also a view that fairness and justice are one of the core values of socialism.

Fairness and justice are universal values pursued by human beings since ancient times, and they are also the core values and essential requirements of socialism. Without fairness and justice, there will be no socialism. The Sixth Plenary Session of the 16th CPC Central Committee proposed to establish a socialist core value system, and fairness and justice are one of the socialist core values. One of the important reasons why the founders of socialism, including Marx, strongly criticized capitalism and actively advocated socialism at that time was that they thought that capitalism's indulgence of free competition made it difficult to achieve fairness and justice under capitalist conditions. Only under the socialist condition that the political and economic system that produces exploitation and oppression no longer exists can the value of fairness and justice be truly realized. It is a fundamental view and attitude towards the purpose, meaning and road of life. The content includes happiness, bitter optimism, life and death, honor and disgrace, love and so on. It is an important part of the world outlook and is restricted by the world outlook. The core issue of outlook on life is how to understand and deal with the relationship between personal development and social progress, that is, the relationship between private and public. Marxism holds that all kinds of outlook on life are the products of certain social productive forces and relations of production. Because of the different social status, life experience and circumstances of each class in each era, their understanding of the meaning and purpose of life is different, and their outlook on life is bound to be different. The fundamental criterion for evaluating whether a philosophy of life is progressive, revolutionary, backward and reactionary is whether it meets the requirements of social development. The bourgeois outlook on life is characterized by individualism. Everything starts from self, and everything is personal. Exploitation of others and the pursuit of profit maximization are regarded as the fundamental purpose of life. The proletariat is the representative of the most advanced productive forces and relations of production in human history. It represents the interests of being oppressed and exploited, and shoulders the great historical mission of building socialism and capitalism. Therefore, the outlook on life of the proletariat is revolutionary and scientific, and it is fundamentally opposed to the outlook on life of all exploiting classes in history. The proletarian outlook on life is characterized by collectivism. Everything is for the collective interests of the proletariat and the masses of the people, taking selfless dedication, self-sacrifice and serving the people wholeheartedly as the fundamental significance and value of life, and realizing the ideals of socialism and capitalism as the highest goal of life.
