Introduction to TOEFL writing requirements and skills
As one of the most important conditions for studying abroad, many students may have great problems in writing when preparing for the TOEFL test. Today, I will explain to you the requirements and skills of TOEFL writing.

I. Writing requirements

1. Understand the TOEFL test method.

The new TOEFL test is often a brand-new model for domestic candidates at present, and it is necessary for candidates to strengthen their familiarity with it when preparing for the exam. For example, you can practice online typing, because candidates in the computer test must pay attention to typing speed, especially your English typing speed.

2. The idea of the article

What's the TOEFL score? If you want to write a TOEFL composition well, you need to pay attention to the intention of the article. Generally speaking, TOEFL writing is five paragraphs and three points. This structure is actually the most common argumentative structure, with the first paragraph+the middle three paragraphs+the last paragraph. The new TOEFL writing mainly examines whether reference candidates can skillfully use this structure to help them express their views on an idea.

3. Details

In the writing of each paragraph, it is generally required to see some details supporting the theme of the paragraph after the topic sentence (details can be: a. specific examples, your own and others'); B. Imaginative examples generally start with imagination, pose, and expect to be rational ... C. Discuss the pros and cons. D. use metaphors, metaphors and other rhetorical devices. ) Each paragraph can be supported by different details according to different usage situations, and the details used in each paragraph are preferably in different modes.

4. Language

Grasping words: If there is a mistake in the use of words in the right place, such as replacing the head with the brain, the ambiguity must be eliminated, and semantic ambiguity and logical confusion cannot occur in the topic sentence of each paragraph. Rhetoric is almost necessary: there is an essential difference between used and useless, and good use will add points.

5. Sentence patterns

Never be a simple sentence from beginning to end. Pay attention to all kinds of complex sentences used in the article. The following suggestions are necessary: appositive, attributive clause, object clause and adverbial clause. And pay attention to the use of double negation.

6. Word requirements

You can't talk too much. For those students who write a lot of words and get high grades, the foundation is very good. After exceeding a certain number of words, there is not much extra points, so there is no need to stick to words.

Too few words is not enough. There should be a matching range between the number of words and the high score, not "the more words, the higher the score". Words beyond this range will not reduce your score, but increased grammatical errors and spelling mistakes will become points for deduction.

The only requirement for small composition is the lower limit, which cannot be lower than 180. But if you write something, it can't be less than 180. So the number of words is not the key, and it doesn't matter if the number of words exceeds the standard. But please be careful not to copy the original text to increase the number of words. Copying the original text will make the machine think that your rewriting of the original text is too low and will be deducted.

7. Format requirements

TOEFL composition has certain requirements for paragraph format. I suggest that you don't leave spaces when writing. The standard English writing method is to have blank lines between paragraphs, but it is ok without blank lines, that is, you can go directly to the next paragraph. Foreigners don't pay special attention to empty lines. But the first sentence should be capitalized and spelled correctly. Other spelling mistakes also need a little attention, and try not to have too many concentrated spelling mistakes.

Second, writing skills.

1. Template use, material accumulation

TOEFL independent writing preparation must accumulate writing templates and materials. Using writing templates in a short time can obviously improve independent writing, but if you want to get high marks, you need to prepare your own writing templates, and you can't apply the common templates on the Internet. Preparing the TOEFL independent writing template in advance can save writing time and make your composition write faster in the exam. The accumulation of material is to make your composition not too empty, and the argument of independent writing needs material as the argument support. Some high-frequency writing topics should accumulate corresponding writing materials. In addition, they should use materials flexibly, and materials under some themes can be used in series with each other.

Start and end of accumulation

A good beginning is half the battle, and so is TOEFL independent writing. Writing a good beginning can make the marking teacher shine at the moment and praise him greatly, which will also improve the overall score of the composition. If you want to write a good beginning, I suggest you accumulate some advanced sentence patterns and authentic expressions. When using advanced sentence patterns, be sure to be correct. I suggest you point out the topic directly at the beginning of your composition, and then discuss it. The end of the article also needs more attention. The end of independent writing is a summary of the whole article, which is the finishing touch of the article. At this time, it is necessary to clarify the point of view again and make a brief summary. Writing the beginning and end of TOEFL independent writing will definitely add a lot of color to the article. I suggest you practice more at ordinary times and prepare some eye-catching sentences at the beginning and end for various types of topics.

3. The content of the article is relevant, substantive and self-evident.

The content of TOEFL independent writing should be relevant and self-evident. Generally speaking, the topic of independent writing will make you choose to agree or disagree. You can choose either side, but the content of the article must be consistent and you can't deviate from the topic during the discussion. In the first paragraph, after clarifying your own views, we will discuss them separately. The subdivision argument must serve the main argument, and there can be no contradictions and inconsistencies in the article.

modify

On the same topic, most of the articles written by candidates themselves are difficult to compare with the model essays in quality.

Therefore, candidates also need to learn to modify their own articles in combination with model essays. Especially when the same topic has been practiced once and there is a model essay for reference, if the candidates can find their own shortcomings through comparison and correct them, it is equivalent to getting a good article that absorbs the essence of the model essay.
