How to attend academic conferences to avoid missing important contents and opportunities in chatting and satiating? Science surveyed scholars of different ages and asked them to share the secrets and skills of attending the conference.

Why: Why did you attend the academic conference?

For the first time, Xiao Bai participated in an academic conference as a volunteer, only remembering all kinds of dizziness when listening to English reports, nervousness and anxiety when receiving VIP cows, and paying attention to details to guide the participants and the reception work at the venue. The only happy thing may be the rich variety and delicious fruit cake during tea break (eating a lot of walnuts to supplement the lost brain power). As a scientific researcher, the most important thing to attend an academic conference is of course to ask Daniel about the prospect of his research direction (whether this road is feasible and whether there is room for us to play in the current research situation), or to get to know colleagues for future exchanges or to find potential employers. Yes, this is an academic conference. Xiaobai can broaden his research ideas and open up a new chapter in his research.

What about Daniel? Daniel's goal is to show his research results and popularize his new research ideas that are not known or accepted by the public. Of course, there are inevitably new opportunities for cooperation and thirst for talents.

To put it simply, at the Xiaobai Scientific Research Academic Conference, we followed the footsteps of our predecessors to explore the direction step by step, and Daniel is here to guide more people to embark on a road they have opened up.

What: What kind of meeting did you attend?

What kind of conference do you choose to attend? The topics are broad, and the specific topics involve research fields, large conferences, small conferences and traditional conferences? With so many choices, it was a bit difficult at first.

For students, it is often easy to get lost in a large conference. Choose a small meeting, and there may be a speech, which is both an exercise and a way to raise awareness. At the same time, there are good travel expenses, although travel is only the added value of academic conferences.

For professors, when choosing an academic conference, they will not only consider whether it is related to the research topic, but also consider whether they can get the opportunity to display posters. Regular participation in some traditional conferences in this field is to seek recognition from academic partners and groups, while participation in some interdisciplinary and new conferences is to understand the content of one's research field from the perspective of others.

How: How to attend the meeting is more rewarding?

There are so many reports in an academic conference, should we use greedy algorithm to traverse all the reports? It seems that we don't have parallel threads for the time being, so we can use one brain for three purposes and one brain for many purposes. Most importantly, you can't seem to do two things at once.

"Everything is established in advance, and if it is not planned, it will be abolished." According to the theme of the meeting report, the time and place of reporting related topics, the planning action group will make a road map in advance. The road map will show the importance, time, order and location of the topics you want to hear, as well as which topics you are interested in to report conflicts arising from time problems and the decisions you will take in case of conflicts.

How can you waste such a good opportunity to communicate face to face with the author of the paper? Sometimes you need to study the research results of the speakers you admire in advance. If the English expression on the spot is not very good, you need to design constructive questions in advance.

By the way, don't drink too much when socializing. Although students are easily attracted by scientists they admire and often quote, the most practical way to socialize is to really communicate with everyone in the group, regardless of their level and status.

The people you meet at academic conferences may be future colleagues, collaborators, reviewers, and other roles that affect your science and career. Scientific career is not an easy road, but it will become easier if it is supported by peers.

The end of the meeting means the end. No!

In this "brainstorming", your inspiration and new ideas may pass you by forever because they are not left on the paper in time, and fate is to miss a lifetime (hey! ! Unfortunately). And shouldn't the important findings in those keynote speeches be recorded in time to share with you? This is the second processing of information, not only to save the key content, but also for further thinking.

For newly established contacts, you need to keep in touch after the meeting; The newly planned cooperation should be followed up and implemented after the meeting.
