On Music in Lingnan —— Music Essay on the 40th Anniversary of Guangdong Institute of Contemporary Literature and Art

This book is about Cantonese music and belongs to Lingnan culture.

Guangdong music comes from folk culture and arts. At the beginning of its birth, it belongs to the "wild grass and idle flowers" that are not in the "elegant hall", so most of it has no history and few traces. Guangdong music is the same. According to a new study, Guangdong music began to be born as far back as the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1573). After nearly 300 years, by about 1860, Guangdong music has formally possessed three conditions: "characteristic repertoire, mass base and representative figures", thus forming a single music category.

Lingnan culture is an important organic part of the long and splendid Chinese culture and an important part of the hundred gardens of Chinese culture, including Guangfu culture, Hakka culture and Chaoshan culture, among which Guangfu culture is the most distinctive and influential culture in Lingnan culture. The data unearthed from the site of Lingnan ancestors prove that Lingnan culture is primitive culture. Lingnan culture is based on unique geographical environment and historical conditions, with agricultural culture and marine culture as its source. In the process of development, it constantly absorbs and integrates Central Plains culture and Western culture, and gradually forms its own unique characteristics-pragmatism, openness, compatibility and innovation.
