The School of Physical Education of Shanghai Normal University was formerly the Department of Physical Education of Shanghai Second Normal University, which was founded in 1956. 1958, Shanghai No.1 Normal University and No.2 Normal University merged to form the Physical Education Department of Shanghai Normal University. 1960 was renamed the Department of Physical Education of Shanghai Normal University, and 1998 was renamed the School of Physical Education and Health of Shanghai Normal University. In July 2002, it was named the School of Physical Education of Shanghai Normal University.
