The dispute between writing and writing in this period is a debate about the boundary between literature and non-literature, which greatly promotes people's in-depth study of literature itself. Moreover, due to the serious tendency of aristocratization and formalization in the literature of the Southern Dynasties, it also caused sharp criticism and in-depth thinking by some progressive literati. In this context, Liu Xie and Zhong Rong wrote two literary theory masterpieces, Wen Xin Diao Long and Shi Pin respectively. Wen Xin Diao Long made a comprehensive and systematic exposition of style, creation and literary criticism, and established its own literary thought system. Shi Pin not only comments on the achievements and styles of many poets since the Han and Wei Dynasties, but also systematically discusses the origin and development of poetry. These two works not only have a clear tendency to oppose formalism, but also push literary research to a new stage of in-depth development, which has a far-reaching impact on the development of literary criticism and literary theory in later generations. In addition, Xiao Tong's Preface to Selected Works, Liang Wudi's Golden House, Yan Zhitui's Family Instructions for Yan's Family, and Xu Ling's Preface to Yutai's New Poetry all express their literary views from different aspects.
