Hong Shen (1894 65438+February 31-1August 29, 955), whose scientific name is Hongda, whose real name is Bojun, posthumous title Qianzhai, a native of Wujin, Jiangsu Province, is a theorist, playwright and director of China film drama, and one of the founders of China modern drama and film. Representative works include: Wukui Bridge, Fragrant Rice and Qinglong Lake.

As the author of Hong Shen's Collected Works and Hong Shen's Selected Works, Hong Shen has created and arranged 38 plays in his life, most of which are based on real life and have distinct characteristics of the times. Such as Pear Seller, The Tragedy of the Poor, Zhao Haoqi Yan, Wukui Bridge, Fragrant Rice, Treasure Virtue, The Early Crow, Watching the Sky, etc. He also co-authored many of his one-act plays, such as Salted Fish Doctrine and Smuggling. He also wrote a large number of theoretical criticism works, introducing western drama knowledge. Theoretical works include Performance of Movie Drama, Screenwriting Methods of Movie Drama, and Preliminary Knowledge of Drama Directors. Hong Shen's main achievement lies in the stage art. During his 30 years, he directed about 40 plays, such as The Fan of the Rich Man, The Death of Li Xiucheng, Fascist Bacteria, Hero of the Grass, Cocks crow to see the sky early and so on. He attaches great importance to the social effects of drama and can use different creative methods for different scripts. He is a director who knows the performing arts very well and is good at inspiring and inducing actors in various ways. The director's techniques are diverse and creative, and he has made great contributions to China's drama career. Among them (Wukuiqiao, Xiangmi and Qinglong Lake) is his rural trilogy.

Hong Shen's realistic plays have a distinct rational color ("the visualization is not enough, and the treatment of the subject matter is too mechanical"), showing a tendency of "mechanical realism" (when compiling, always decide the desired final effect in advance, and then carefully and patiently look for specific methods). The combination of social drama and propaganda drama is not only the feature of his plays, but also the weakness of his plays.
