Jinan University, as one of the oldest universities in China, has an important position in the history of higher education in China: the first overseas Chinese institution of higher learning founded by the state, one of the century-old universities whose name has been used all the time, the first batch of universities in China to try out the credit system, the first university to set up a medical school in a comprehensive university, the first university to set up a research institution on overseas Chinese issues, and the first university to set up a business department.
