What is esi for short?
Esi is the abbreviation of basic science index database.

Essential Science Indicators Database (ESI) is a basic analysis and evaluation tool to measure the performance of scientific research and track the development trend of science. It was launched by ISI, a world-renowned academic information publishing institution in the United States, on 200 1. After the reorganization of ISI assets, ESI became a part of Thomson Reuters.

ESI is a quantitative analysis database established by Thomson Reuters based on more than11000 documents of more than one academic journal collected by SCI and SSCI.

ESI has become one of the important index tools widely used in the world to evaluate the international academic level and influence of universities, academic institutions and countries/regions.

The 22 disciplines set by ESI are: biology and biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, economy and commerce, engineering, earth science, materials science, mathematics, comprehensive interdisciplinary, physics,

Social science, space science, agricultural science, clinical medicine, molecular biology and genetics, neuroscience and behavior, immunology, psychiatry and psychology, microbiology, environmental science and ecology, botany and zoology, pharmacology and toxicology.

ESI makes statistics on the paper data of SCIE and SSCI databases of all universities and scientific research institutions in the world in recent 1 1 year, and determines the threshold for measuring research performance according to the cited frequency, and respectively discharges the top 1% research institutions, scientists and research papers, the top 50% countries/regions and the top 0. 1% popular papers.

ESI comprehensively measures the scientific research level, academic reputation of institutions, academic influence of scientists and academic level of journals from all angles through six indicators, including the number of papers, frequency of cited papers, frequency of all cited papers, highly cited papers, hot papers and cutting-edge papers. All statistics are updated every two months.
