Mo Yan's acceptance speech:
It was supposed to be the season of red sorghum. It's a pity that sorghum is not planted now. I don't think you have seen it. I feel very happy. When I first heard the news, I was a little surprised, because I thought there were many excellent literary writers waiting in line all over the world. It is unlikely that it will be my turn as a relatively young writer, so I was surprised when I first heard the news.
I think my hometown is closely related to my literature, because you also know that there are three sages in Gaomi these two days: Four Treasures of the Study, clay sculpture, paper-cutting, dusty New Year pictures, and Qiang Mao. These folk arts and cultures have also grown up with me, and I have been exposed to these cultural elements since I was a child. When I started writing, these elements of folk culture inevitably entered my novels, which influenced and even determined my artistic style.
I think my works are China literature and a part of world literature. My literature shows the life of China people and the unique culture and customs of China. At the same time, my novels also describe people in a broad sense. I have always stood in the perspective of people and always wrote about people. I think such works transcend the limitations of region, race and ethnic group.
For me, criticizing literary works is an important function, but we should also praise good things, truth, goodness and beauty. That is to say, when a writer chooses a creative theme, he must have something comfortable and strongly motivates him, and then he can be motivated and write works that touch both the writer himself and people.
