This alley of Gujia Garden still maintains the simple and elegant style of old Suzhou, with white walls and tiles, small courtyard houses and a group of buildings surrounded by a low wall on the east side. This is the original range of Gu Jia Bao Shu Garden. The original appearance of Bao Shu Garden has been lost, and there are two existing roads in the old house of Guzhai. The fifth entrance of East Road was rebuilt by Mr. Gu Jiegang's father on 193 1, and the sign of "Suzhou Cultural Relics Protection Unit Gu Jiegang's Former Residence" was embedded on the wall.
Because it is a small part of the old house, you need to turn left to the front of the hall after entering the ordinary wooden door facing east. This room faces south and has three upright compartments, two rear compartments and an auxiliary compartment. The front is a parallel four-bay, the living room is in the middle of the main room, and the wings on both sides extend to the back patio, so the patio in front of the house is particularly spacious and bright.
In front of the patio, it used to be connected with the garage door of the first four entrances, but now it has been closed by laying bricks or stones, and the brick-carved gatehouse on the door is still discernible. The lintel is engraved with the four characters "Zi Yi", which comes from the sentence "Zi Yi, Sang Zi has something to say" in Zuo Zhuan written by the famous dramatist and calligrapher Zhou. The slate patio was changed into a concrete floor, with a half gallery in the west and an alley running through the north and south in the east, so the existing former residence became an independent courtyard. The main room faces south, and it is a hard mountain bungalow. There is an eaves gallery in front of the house, and there is a French window in the middle of the living room. The floor of the hall is paved with square bricks with six screen doors in the middle. Although it still maintains the traditional style of the old house in Suzhou, the house has adopted new decoration, especially the mud ceiling above, which reflects the western style and the door is also western. Looking back on that year, the sight and inspiring words of nobles gathered in the hall made people feel deeply. There are wooden fences on both sides of the living room, and doors on both sides of the front lead to the back room, which is the living room of Mr. Gu Jiegang's descendants. There is a small passage behind the screen door and a small patio leading to the back, which is now closed. There are wings on both sides of the patio, which are connected with the front inner room through doors. The auxiliary room on the east side of the fifth entrance of Dongluo is closely connected with the main room, which is the same in height and structure as the main room. This used to be Mr. Gu Jiegang's study. Like the main room, it can be divided into two rooms, one room and one compartment. Because it was borrowed by the company, the floor is different. The wardrobe with mottled marks on the wall left an extraordinary historical memory. A generation of masters used to study here. In addition to editing publications and compiling teaching plans, they have also completed important works such as Jin Wengong and Contemporary China History. Although this room is empty, you can still feel the attraction of the master's moral articles and imagine.
At the third entrance of Gu Lao Zhai, there is a spacious three halls. It is 8.5 meters wide and 7.5 meters deep, with seven purlins, flat beams, flat roof and low cornices, and has a legacy of Ming architecture, probably the legacy of Gu's "Anshitang". Two houses and other attached houses on the west road have already been scattered into other people's homes. However, these ancient Ming and Qing buildings left in the old house belong to Gu Jiegang's former residence.
The Sri Lankan people are gone, and the books are still the same. 1993 is Mr. Gu Jiegang's 100 birthday. Academics from all over the country gathered in Suzhou to hold the academic seminar of Mr. Gu Jiegang. Hu Sheng, Fei Xiaotong, Lei Jieqiong, Qian Weichang and other cultural celebrities all came to Suzhou from Beijing to attend. With admiration, the delegates went to Mr. Gu's former residence to pay their respects and solemnly hung the commemorative plaque of "Gu Jiegang's former residence".
